and intense soccer the entire game Preston passed well played well as a team and took plenty of shirts — 1 7 compared to the Beavers' seven But when lime expired the in (avor of the score was Beavers “Our forwards had nothing on their shots" Preston coach Todd Coburn said “Their shots were weak and half of their shots were from outside the box” “We’re if ally in a slump" Coburn continued "This is 1- -0 Led by Summer Maseuli Preston Preston played smothering defense Maseuli simply controlled everything in the middle of the defense while her midfielders were busy sending ball after ball to forwards Alison Gamble and Mindy Murdock who then would promptly launch an all-oassault on the American Falls' goal Unfortunately for the lady Indians they came up empty time and time again “Every ball that went in the middle Summer controlled” Coburn said Preston simply could not finish Twenty minutes into the ut first half the Preston defense finally allowed a Beavers' : shot after keeping the ball deep in American Falls' territory for nearly twenty minutes Rosemary Martinez pounded a Letisia Rodriguez pass into the Tribe's goal making the score "They never really got any open shots” Cobum said “Our defense really played well” But despite the score the Tribe refused to give in The defense continued its stellar play and the offense continued launching attacks on the Beavers' goal It seemed the entire game consisted of a great defensive play followed by an offensive charge that unfortunately for Preston usually resulted in a missed shot or failure to capitalize on an American The Preston boys' soccer team won the majority of the battles in its game against American Falls Tuesday but it still failed to win the game losing 1 “It's the problem we’ve been having all year” Preston coach Brandon Lyon said “We take plays off and we get burned The boys played tough and il'£hard to focus for 80 minutes The ' mental part will come” American Falls is known for its speed and physical play But for most of the game Preston matched the Beavers' speed and really outplayed them physically with the exception of about 3-- ' IS min-- : utes of the game The Tribe seemed to have it all going in the first half and managed to out- - shoot an agressive American Falls team The Beavers' spent the first 35 minutes back on their heels trying to ' hold off the Indians which they somehow managed to do — considering (he abundance of Preston shots Things started to look up for the Beavers in the final four minutes of the half First of all they managed to mount an offensive attack that actually made it past midfield But the Beavers' good fortune didn't end there They were able to do in four minutes what the Indians failed to do in 36 minutes and that's score American Falls’ Jose Cabrera smashed the ball deep into the net after setting the ball with his hand Preston's coaches protested but to no avail The goal stood and the Beavers took an early lead of at the end of the first half Despite the fact that play had resumed Preston extended its break on into the second half Within a’span of about five minutes the Indians allowed the Beavers to strike twice more with Cabrera scoring both goals After that the Tribe picked its game back up and managed to score when Bryce Andepon sailed one over American Falls' goalkeeper Mario Palacios' outstretched 1- -0 hands “It's a tough loss to swallow because we dominated play “ Lyon said Preston returns to action Saturday at 1 pm when it hosts Shelley in a non-leag- tilt ue ' |
