DEAR READER: For a healthy person who sits on a dry public toilet seat the risk of adverse health consequences is negligible To begin with intact skin provides an extremely effective barrier to infection In the second piace many disease- causing microorganisms are killed by exposure to light and air so they don't survive very long on toilet seats I grant you that a person with an open abrasion or a cut who sits on a toilet seat that has just been soiled by the previous user could contract a serious skin infection or some other communicable disease Of course if in my example the person with the open abrasion or cut does herself have an cems and prohibitions about bathroom practices date back to the time when people weren’t as clean and knowledgeable as they are today And antibiotics hadn't been discovered In our modern society people are much more meticulous about personal hygiene We wash more regularly outhouses are a thing of the past most people are far more educated about infection Therefore diseases are rarely spread in public restrooms Today's contagious afflictions are more likely to be transmitted by unprotected sex inhaling infected airborne droplets or eating contaminated food Nonetheless I urge prudence in using public restrooms Just to be on the Safe side wipe the toilet seatbefore use and if possible minimize your length of “sitting time” make every effort to avoid genital contact with the facili- ties and wash your hands before leaving the restroom GRIZZWELLS ‘9$ WR©n ?
