SOU Movie review AP Photo Andy Garcia as Mike Delmarco Samuel L Jackson as John Mills and Ashley Judd as Jessica And for a while he’s successful Judd’s character San Francisco homicide detective Jessica Shepard would be a walking cliche if die were a man She’s a tough volatile alcoholic who picks up random men at bars for rough anonymous sex to avoid facing her childhood demons: the death of her mother at the hands of her police officer father who then killed himself when Jessica was 6 Screenwriter Sarah Thorp in her first feature isn’t afraid to apply these characteristics to a woman and to make her seemingly unredeemable Aside from being beautiful and hav ing some innate detective skills Jessica doesn't have much going for her (And speaking of her looks hoe’s a minor quibble: Jessica kills off at least a bottle of 'cabernet sauvignon by herself every night and wakes up hung over every morning to the shrill sound of her cell phone but never looks puffy arid never puts on weight Average mortals would be freakishly bloated) But Thorp’s script spirals1 wildly out ofcon- trol as “Twisted” approaches its climactic twist (which you'll probably be able to figure out about a into the movie) Jessica is investigating a series of murders that all look the same: The men’s heads are bashed in then their hands are burned with a cigarette And all the men just happen to be Jessica’s stands — but she can’t recall where UP!) SET ME UP LOSER AFTER LOSER ! SOU WITH firmuiu BEETLE BAILEY half-ho- HAGAR THE HORRIBLE one-nig- Shepard in Twisted’ she was when the killings happened because she gets drunk and blacks out every flight' Even though Jessica becomes the prime suspect die's implausibly allowed to remain on the case with her partner Mike (Andy Garcia) because the police commissioner (Samuel L Jackson) is a father figure to her He was Jessica's father's partner and raised her after her parents died Clues become obvious but the motives become hazy There are the usual red herrings: Is a rival in the homicide department trying to frame her? Or could it be her partner Mike with whom there’s been tension Since her first day on the job? Maybe Jessica really is the killer she thinks she’s going crazy which we could figure out for ourselves without snippets of dialogue ing repeatedly in her ears like a chorus The hole in the plot twist is so big it’s more like a doughnut and even the fine work of reliable actors like Judd Jackson and Garcia can’t ' save the film from its ridiculous conclusion In the end “Twisted” really is just another crime thriller after all “Twisted” a Paramount Pictures release is rated R for violence language and sexuality One and a half stars out of four ' ur ht New on videoDVD David Germain and surprises There’s also a featurette followto shooting to ing Scott from the editing room DVD-Cset $3998 DVD only $2795 (Warner Bros) AP Movie Writer D o releases: Selected “Matchstick Men” A surprisingly modest and human story from Ridley Scott known for huge visual spectacles Nicolas Cage stars as a neurotic con man whose latest caper is complicated by the arrival of a rambunctious daughter (Alison Lohman) he never knew he had- In audio commentary Scott and screenwriters Nicholas and Ted Griffin lead the audience through the film’s twists home-vide- PEANUTS “The Missing” — Ron Howard’s Old West thriller faded quickly in theaters but is worth checking out on video Cate Blanchett stars as a pioneer woman who enlists her estranged father (Tommy Lee Jones) to track ho1 abducted daughter The two-diset includes three short films by Howard who also provides ' commentary DVD set $2895' (TriStar) sc - Shoshone Trail novel by David J Hawkes A the draw she saw the winter camp of the Shoshone Sarah started to follow the soldiers ' wife you are wise” Bandown to the river plain when Rockwell nock John said with a smile on his face “If we grabbed the bridle of the appaloosa ate your cooking instead of fighting we would ' “Sarah wait Let us not go down there” all be too fat to sit the war horse” on Rockwell she started to speak Turning All the inhabitants of the lodge were laugh- -' but the former guard of the Prophet burly ing now “Perhaps- if the women were to sit at Joseph held up his hand “I know what you are the council we could have peace” said No1 going' to say but we must wait Imre Moroni Arrows between bites of food will be fine He will be brought safely out of The talk in the lodge lightened for the that valley of deathThis I know” moment All were talking and laughing Even Staring at Rockwell Sarah felt her feelings the young Strikes Hard was propped- up and going out of control: She had known the eating by himself Sitting back from the fire famous Porter Rockwell for quite some time Hawk smiled Only he knew what was to but she had never seen him like this A hauntcome '1 : ed faraway look covered his features but she The sky in the east was light now and Sarah coujd also see a quiet strength in his eyes riding at the rear of the column of soldiers felt Right now he didn’t look like the sometimes a feeling of excitement ripple down the long wild than she had known Nodding once she files' of men and horses Ahead of her the men : said “All right” were checking rifles revolvers or adjusting ' the stallion Rockwell sighed of go Letting cartridge boxes Eyeing Porter she sensed he “I don’t want to partake of any of this ” ' could feel it too Tadpole wais cleaning up the breakfast pots Suddenly ahead of them she heard a single when Moroni and the others heard a single rifle rifle shot Now the column broke into a riot shot- then a loud cry from inside the village and from the front she heard die clear notes of Bannock John Swiftly crawled upright Sitting a bugle Trotting along' behind the cavalrymen to the entrance of the lodge and peered out Sarah could now make put in early mornPulling his head back inside his eyes rested ing light the' head of the column dropping on each person before he spoke “The bluffs bn down from the bluffs into the river bottoms thefarside of the river are covered with And there she saw on the far side of the icy d draw Stopping river a winding 'the appal oosa Sarah looked closely into the See tomorrow's Herald Journal for the next installment river bottoms' There scattered up and down o( this story " ITXy MOTHER GOOSE AND GRIMM - WRREN KN6W MlS PROFESSIONAL JUMP ROPE CAREER1 MAS OVER WHEN QUTlAflLKEDTHE DOCTOR OUT WALKED THE NURSE v out walked the law with the ALLIGATOR PURSE FOX TROT : : - - - brush-choke- REAL LIFE ADVENTURES CLOSE TO HOME Win at bridge ' By Phillip Alder Ernest Hemingway wrote in a letter Actually if a writer needs a dictionary he should ' ' not write He should have read the dictionary at least three' times from beginning to end ' and then have loaned it to someone who needs it” If abridge player needs an ' opponent to have a particular holdinghe should play for if y You art South the declarer in four hearts West starts the defense with die two top spades You ruff and draw two rounds of trumps but West discards a diamond How would you' continue?
