receive drops dramatically a phenomenon researchers believe is influenced by lower levels of parental education heavier weight smoking and pregnancy The study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh Schdol of Medicine and published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine did not ask the girls why they were not exercising hut we'd suspect part on of the reason is a physical education in America's public schools While today’s elementary school students might have gym class once a week their parents had PE once a day Obesity levels appear to mirror this phenomenon Public school systems need to examine these issues with an eye toward bumping up physical educa- tion requirements as well as offering classes that stimulate an interest in lifelong fitness The benefits of exercise are well documented but they may be par- tend' Exercise and participation in sprats can also help young women develop a positive body image improve their and boost their self confidence Some research suggests that students involved in extracurricular activities make better grades Part of that may be driven by eligibility requirements but there is some thinking that the discipline required to train and play a competitive sport may translate into academic success While many girls would benefit from playing sprats medical professionals tout significant benefits to simply walking i— 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week This activity which requires only comfortable shoes should be accessible to nearly everyone Certainly few women continue to compete in team sports throughout their lives But if young women become acquainted with a variety of activities that pique their interest and keep them moving in their late teens they may very well remain physically active in adulthood Your view 400 East project futile ' To the editor If the city planners officials and all others who advocate the destruction of Fourth East and its impact on sur-rounding input streets would take a single drive over 1270 in St Louis they would soon see the futility of any efforts to correct a traffic prob- lem caused by too many cars trying to get to the same place at the same time 1270 was once a lovely two lane residential road then a four lane highway then an eight lane free way and at last count is a twelve lane race track with bumper to bumper traffic going seventy five plus miles an hour during morning and evening rush hours Eight foot high stone walls have been erected for miles to help shield houses' from the noise and the ugliness and the unhealthy smell of traffic A driver can expect a fifteen minute delay any time and if there is an accident miles of traffic can remain on hold for up to two hours A sixteen lane freeway would not make any difference If you don’t like St Louis traffic try Denver or Los Angeles Logan however is NOT a big city If every student did not wait to slip into class two minutes before the bell and if every worker did not rush to clock in five minutes before starting time if just half of them would leave twenty minutes earlier either to get to their destination sooner or to take a -longer route Logan City would not need to tear up the trees and hearts of an entire neighborhood to accommodate the insensitivity of non residents or that of some residents It is time to tell all such travelers “So it ain’t like it used to be Adjust!” Arrive at work or school early Arefiteshing drink and chat with friends or co workers before the day begins can be quite nice The new road as planned has no beginning and no end The biggest pipe can cany only as much water as enters a crimped beginning end and will expel the same amount at its exit Such flow is called a traffic tie up Engineers and City Planners have yet to beat it Logan City has the streets People need to quit belly aching and either adjust their schedules or take a different and longer less traveled route Others do this everyday And please leave Island Market alone! It is not too bad to look at and delightfully accommodating We like iL We would miss it’s loaf of bread gallon oif milk it's candy bar and jug ofpop Have a good dayl RuthS Miller ' ' Logan I Mallard Fillmore HeraldJoumal Ife fWfMW 12 r HiMWHiaaHW ftrtAce ooiwib?
