their own property He said that with leafy spurge being a noxious weed they are required by law to keep it under control When it is found within the first five years it is easier to treat “If property owners would do this it would help tremendously” Israelsen said “One thing I stress to private land owners is that the county cannot control weeds for everyone" Merritt said “It’s too big of a problem to depend on one entity” ’ With the distribution of die flea beetle integrated with other management controls such as herbicides and graz- ing along with the cooperation of land owners Merritt possibility to eradicate" Dewey Said “But once it gets so big it will be nearly impossible to control” Joel Merritt county weed control officer said there are three ways of controlling leafy spurge: herbicides goats and sheep and biological controls He said that goats and sheep will keep it mowed off but cattle and other livestock cannot eat it Herbicides work in control- ling the weed but can be costly and some infected areas on wildlands are hard to reach “If you are going to have a spray program you have to stick with it” said Merritt He said the wired is very prolific and the seeds can remain dormant for years so treated areas need to be monitored even after the plant is killed Merritt said the most effec- -' tive management factor has been using biological controls A foreign flea beetle was brought in about eight years ago to feed on the plant He-said years of testing have ic shown that the beetle is on leafy only feeding spurge Merritt said the beetles lay eggs in the plant and the larva feed off of it by eating the root system and eventually killing it He said that there was 80 to 90 percent control where the beetle was released Five Days Only To 50 On Save Aids Herald
