Show The Herald Journal Logan Utah Sunday March 31 2002 — C7 Biography and Handcart Award winners announced By USU Media Sally Zanjani a political scientist from Nevada and Eilean Adams an independent writer from Seattle are the recipients of the Evans Biography and Handcart Awards the Mountain West Crater for Regional Studies at Utah State University announced March 11 The authors will be honored at a public awards ceremony April 11 at Utah State University s Haight Alumni Center Zanjani an adjunct professor of political science at the ' University of Nevada Reno received the Evans Biography Award for “Sarah Winnemucca” published by the University of Netftaska Press Winnemucca was born in Nevada the daughter and granddaughter of Paiute chiefs ' Winnemucca and Thickee Shewas an interpreterfor the Army and an impassioned speaker and writer on the subrelations ject of Indian-whit- e Zanjani (PhD NYU 1974) is a prolific writer having pro' duced seven books and numerous articles mostly on subjects having to do with the history of Nevada including Native Americans mining and protest She lives in Reno Adams a retired Boeing worker was awarded the Evans Handcart Award for “Hell or High Water James White’s Disputed Passage ' through Grand Canyon 1867” published by Utah State University Press James ' White was Adams’ grandfather and his story known previously only within the family ety of subjects In 1959 she became interested in writing a book about her grandfather James White and embarked on 30 years of research resulting in the manuscript that was accepted by Utah State University Press Adams is retired and lives in Seattle The $10000 Evans Biography Award established in 1983 recognizes outstanding research and writing of a biography of a person who lived a significant portion of his or her life in the region of the West that was historically influenced by Mormon institutions and social practices Books selected to receive this prize undergo a two-tier- By USU Media Relations He joined Utah State in 962 as Dean of Students and later served as vice president of student affairs In 1980 he returned to fulltime teaching for 10 years friendships understanding and awareness among all segments of the Cache Valley communi- Osborne’s community service began in 1971 when she served in public relations for the Alliance for the Varied Arts(AVA) Osborne is currently employed as director of the Women’s Center for Life Long Learning at Utah State and serves on the board of the Bear River Regional Arts Council and the Cache Valley United Way Her most recent service project was to honor women who died from breast cancer and those who survived breast ties “These awards were given to Janet Osborne and Claude cancer “Janet has devoted her to uplifting and enriching Center For more information about Utah State Logan: -
