By Jill Burcum Minneapoiis-S- Paul Star t theSf's early-bu- d regulars have become good friends “We're a pretty close-kn- it group” he says “We know what’s up generally in each other’s lives It’s more than just sweating in a room together” Once a month they go out to breakfast There are other in between Naturally they help each other stay on the fitness track “It really does make it easier to work out and more fun" Johnson says “If you don’t show up you get a phone call or an saying ’Where Tri-bu- ne Not enough time Without question it's the No 1 excuse for not exercising Type “fitting in fitness" into any Internet search engine and dozens of books medical journals Web sites and news articles pop up with a plethora of tips from experts who know that squeezing in gym time is the main hairier to physical activity We asked a special breed of experts in the Minneapolis-S- t Paul area to weigh in on the topic — people who consistently fit fitness intoisy lives Here’s how they do it Jim Johnson: A daughter a hectic job at Lutheran Brotherhood in Minneapolis and volunteering at church don’t leave much time for exercise in Jim Johnson’s day But at 45 he knows it's the key to staying healthy and maintaining his edge on the ski slope — a hobby he’s enjoyed for years That’s what motivates him to get out of bed at 5:30 am and head to the downtdwn Minneapolis YMCA three or four times a week for step aerobics or another type of car- diovascular workout “ It’s really about variety and finding a time that works” Johnson says”My evenings are filled with other obligations The mornings well not too many people say ’Can you be-a- t my house by 6 ’am?”’ ' sick to her stomach and tired from treatment the workouts made her feel better motivating her to keep going to the gym Wirth’s cancer is in remission She credits her doctors and the StairMaster “Exercise helps you stay positive That’s so important” Todd Piechowski: An applications engineer Who works in sales Piechowski has a that usually means crazy hours and driving all over the i TWin Cities The regular workouts which Johnson supplements with a lunchtime yoga class several times a week help him look good sleep better and keep his cholesterol in check he said There’s also been an unexpected benefit Over the years ‘ are you?”’ Nancy Wirth doesn’t have many specific tips for finding time to work out But around LifeTime Fitness in nearby Plymouth she's an inspiration to others for ditching excuses and making fitness happen In May the mother of three found out she had breast cancer The shock of that diagnosis is still apparent’ Her voice wavers a little and she looks away as she remembers sitting in the doctor’s office She’d always taken care of her body exercised regularly and ate healthy ' foods She didn’t have a family history of the disease Why did she get cancer?
