Please tell me what you think — Tess in Texas DEAR TESS: When Nellie left the machine she abandoned her claim to jt When you took over all the losses and winnings ' belonged to you You were extremely generous to share your winnings with your friend although you had no obligation to do so Were you a fool? No You decided your friendship with Nellie was more important than the money — and that was very classy DEAR ANN: I carpool with several and they are all OK people but one passenger has a habit that drives me to distraction He likes to hum sing or whistle along with the tunes being played on the radio I have asked this fellow to please stop doing this and he does stop for a few minutes but then Ik starts up again He says he “can’t help himself” When I am the driver I can turn off the radio which eliminates the singing but it also prevents me from enjoying toe music Of course when I’m in someone else’s car I can’t very well ask them to turn off the radio I don't want to lose a friend over this but how much should I have to tolerate? Is there some particular rule of etiquette that covers this situation? — Irritated in Illinois DEAR ILLINOIS: When you are riding in someone else’s car you must respect the driver's wishes regarding singing humming and whistling and if you are asked to refrain from any of the above you should do so However when you are in your own car you can whistle hum sing or yell to your heart's content and if your passengers don’t like' it well too darned bad Let ’em take the bus DEAR ANN LANDERS: I need an unbiased person with a good set of brains to help me sort this out I’ve chosen - you A woman I work with (we’re very compatible friends) decided we should take our vacation together and go to Las Vegas and gamble just for the heck of it We saved all year and each of us was able to get together $1800 for the trip “Nellie” and I had a terrific time saw some great shows and ate like royalty We stayed away from the craps tables played a little blackjack and lost a few dollars but not much Then we went for the slot machines which we both love We each had $100 left and decided to play the $1 machines am we were tapped out and all the money we had set aside for gambling was gone Nellie started to walk back to our rooms I then said “I'm going to put one last dollar in and call it quits"-- stepped over to the slot that Nellie had been feeding all night put in a dollar and lo and behold I hit the jackpot I counted the total and it came to $1200 ' Nellie yelled “You have to split that with me I fed that machine all night!” I replied “When you walked away it became MY machine I don’t owe you anything” She yelled “What kind of a friend are you anyway?” Well Ann I realized pur relationship was at stake and decided to split my winnings By-2:3- DILBERT I'N BRINGING NY I GOT RICH SELLING A BOOK CALLED "WHO'S INCREDIBLE" TO GULLIBLE PEOPLE ANYONE ASKS HOW I'N DOING I'LL CASUALLY OPEN THE BOOK AND POINT TO NY NANE IF COPY OF "WHO'S INCREDIBLE" TO NY HIGH SCHOOL REUNION: ARLO AND JANIS WHYA&WDeiUKloa JXFRE'KlteDftMttaa spurs common in activities are so hampered Perhaps Peter H Gott MD Newspaper Enterprise Association By DEAR DR GOTT: Arp bone spurs more common in seniors? I’m 72 and love to be active but cannot because of severe pain in my foot InnersoleS don’t help and my orthopedic sur- geon does not want to operate What can I do? DEAR READER: Little outcroppings of bone can occur in people of any age however they are more common in elderly folks and tend to affect the feet where they feel like stones in the shoe pressing against tendons andaother sensitive tissues Such bone spurs can severely limit activity and affect quality of life therefore they should be addressed The initial treatment is orthotic devices such as pads worn in the shoes The next step is cortisone injections I don’t know why your orthopedic surgeon objects to such surgery This option certainly should be considered given the fact that your - r- another-orthopedis- t would feel differently DEAR DR GOTT: Two years ago at the age of 12 1 suffered a severe case of chickenpox that left extensive scarring on my face neck and shoulders What kind of surgery should I consider to remove the scars? DEAR READER: The type of surgery most suited to your problem can best be decided by a‘ dermatologist or plastic surgeon Many skin diseases cause cosmetic problems that can be troublesome at best disfiguring at Worst However surgery is not always the best antidote Scar tissue from chickenpox or acne for instance is often helped by dermabrasion which actually sandpapers the scars away or other techniques to remove the outermost layers of skin allowing healthy normal skin cells to replace the abnormal ones On the other hand if your dermal scarring is extensive and unsightly I’d lean toward recommending a plastic surgeon because these specialists have extra training in treating serious skin disorders such as scars from bums Perhaps your family physician could help you: choose an appropriate specialist in your com- munity GRIZZWELLS REALIZE itu 1 REPEAT - ZITS 'mmw'im RKHDUMADST MNE&ABOTIUEirciT NTCCHCTIDWEANAP MWXM&i'Nawm- - WKxtmwmw -- BEIGE ITZKNftJW UF£W&BEENAEKe5 CFCUKCCAU6UC1W E58N7 JU$riHBiAWKEKEKFWR AHAarcaiERWiKrop Cfma96mswa0agt Horoscope JW’BUPIY LEO (July 22) -- r The aspects indicate that today there could be someone vouching for you concerning something you’ve been striving for VIRGO (Aug: 22) — Don’t put off another day getting in touch with that individual who you think could offer' you some infor- mation difficult to attain LIBRA (Sept 23) — One of the things you do best is enhance that which others start Chances are you’ll take a o situation " today and turn it into something really great SCORPIO (Oct 22) — Don’t litnii your thinking today to petty terms because a restricted imagination yields meager returns' — Your SAGITTARIUS (Nov ' aln is to not be others to exceplikely generosity tion: However the rewards for your good deeds ' ' might be more than anyone would expectn CAPRICORN (Dec 19) — Because what make dis to have ability you're doing you seem important yet fun others will want to be around you: 19) — When AQUARIUS (Jan home on refurbishing your today use working stand the test of that will materials tody quality By Bernice Bede Osoi Newspaper Enterprise Association 23-A- ug For Saturday April 7 '2001 23-Se- pt Your birthday In the year ahead that GARFIELD in which you become involved could be larg-in scope than your past endeavors Your enterprises will not only be successful but will bring you great joy as wel ARIES (March 19) — Something you've been wanting either for yourself or for your home might Ik found today at a price you can afford TAURUS (April 20) — If a pal does something worthy of acclaim today don’t hold back your praises Compliments from you will mean a lot and have considerable impact on " that person 21 June 20) — Although your GEMINI (May a situation in intentions will not be which you begin as a giver today could have 'time you ending up as the biggest receiver You’d be 20) PISQES (Feb CANCER (June 22) — Although a wise today to take advantage of any social new twist might look intriguing your judgment tation you get especially if you are presently in not discarding proven traditional methods or unattached Someone quite attractive may be in procedures will prove to be quite wise attendance 23-O- er ct so-s- ' 24-N- ov - 21-Ap- ril 23-D- ec 20-M- ay '' s' 22-Ja- : -- self-servin- - 2) g 20-F- ALLEY OOP eb GREETINGS TRADERS Of MOMBASA ME BRING TOU PRECIOUS4 LOOKCAPTAII THE MOORS COME TO "YOU CALL THEBE PRCCIOUE YOUR CHEAP TRINKETS ARE NOTHING : 1 VOUR “WTW insult' ARE i 20-Mar- ch 21-Ju- ly as - Crossword ACROSS Stole 7 Wrap (with ' bandaged 1 13 14 : 15 16 17 18 flight ' Puppeteer Jim Fumed Meaning 'Gram" start Item on an Indian menu Casual top 20 21 Lavish fondness (on) 23 rtor April 6 2001 ' ' 24 Old map huts 32Mapabbr Lonfe-nose-d fish 34 Wisest 37Doa marathon 40 '— Dick : 41 Vast age Giideon' snow Consumes 45 Nav rank rifle ‘3 Set fire to 4 Peach part 5 Before to a bard 6 Mommy's I WAS FLATOKD&Y ANDER Hra!s problem nma HH Social ‘9 ' insect R RiSiT 10 Sleeping- - sickness fly puddings 11 Like Lincoln 34 nano piece 35 Prepos- 12 Go inside 19 Diving bird 22 Vim 36 Boxing- 24 Shadows victory abbr 38 Yale's 26 Grafted in grounds heraldry : 28 District in 39 Fruit ripener 40 Heavy— Germany 30 Pies and (loud rock - 7 English coin 8 Skin I OF TUB Of YOUR JUST TOO MUCH rttitiittl i EJ t ST Lift THE BORN LOSER nuli A TW MINllTf S THf f ItST MINUTf 1 Fragment 2 Spur or HOD' -- HOW THAT’ DOWN BiynnCr AnsmrloPrtviousPiaito scran beeE1C I OiDIIIN'E FRANK AND ERNEST Electrical unit Tenser Military engineer who disarms mines 54 Not moving (2 wdk) ' 55 Stage direction 56 Serves the ' soup 57 Fast and future 25 Hawaiian goose 27 Fate 29 Stop 31 Capture 33 46 47 48 51 " ATfcT 50 Language ' suffix 52 Chopping tool 53 Sty LIE Y I vm YOU WtoTC ABOUT Vi IN TtClXESTEWNJUtflOR KP0KV- - musk) 42 Map part 44 Does filing 49 PL of I 1 ' BUT WD YOU HEAUZeYOU NlbSPeuXD NOJME WORD I USCD IN YOUR EVALUATION WKb 'TwpocunneStweahV mg! |
