Shawn Harrison sports editor Seyeral times ova the past few weeks Utah State gymnastics coach Ray Corn went out of his' way to tell me how proud hewas of this ’ '""Vyear's team Maybe he felt it necesgary since the Aggies (9-- 1 3) didn't make jt to the regional jriea as a team for the first time ritiee'1987He didn't have to say much to convince me Eva since the season began back in January this 2003 squad made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores has been setting records You name it — team records individual records records This season records and even-RQwas an incredible year for gymnastics at USU So why didn't this Aggie team arguably one of the best eva make it to regionals? Til let Com explain it "I predicted the score of 1955 (RQS) would - get us into the regional meet and get us there comfortably" Com said "I was wrong" USU finished with a d 195510 RQS breaking the record of 195447 set in 1997 "All the teams are getting better getting school-recor- stronga getting tougha" Cora continued "We broke so many records We will readjust" Three Aggies did make it to the regional ' meet as individual competitors Senior Nicole Kilpatrick and freshmen Maegan Nelson and Jessica Parenti represented USU last Saturday There is not room enough to go into all the records set this year It was a welcome sight after a couple of years where injuries and inconsistent performances seemed to be plagut ing the Aggies The best thing about this team is almost everyone is back next yea The freshmen alone accounted for at least half of the scoring routines in all but two meets this yea They were led by two outstanding in Nelson and Parenti That duo set a new standard for USU At the Western Gymnastics Conference championships! the last meet where the whole team competed this yea 19 of the 24 routines performed that will be back in 2004 Add to that three incoming freshmen that Com is tickled to have and the return of Rachael Mandy from knee surgery and the Aggies should be loaded While the future certainly looks bright patrick will be missed Ha quia leadership certainly helped this yea as she had ha brat yea since arriving fallow seniors Kim Scha- da man who missed the entire yea with an injury Allison Rosenthal who did beam and floor and Tina Ellis who was forced to retire from the sport two yean ago but stayed on to help coach all played key roles on this team "I don't think ithas really sunk in that it is ova "Kilpatrick said "I had a great yea I just wish die team could have made it to regionals" So do L because I think it could have done well Now it's time fa a few awards from the 2003 season: Most Valuable Gymnast: It's a tough pick between Kilpatrick and Nelson as both did something no otha USU gymnast eva has before — they competed in evoy single event at every meet But I'm going to go with the senior Kilpatrick came to USU with so much promise but injuries seemed to neva allow ha See SEASON on B8 I v V |
