Show And the winner is Julianne Moore - “The End of the Affair” Meryl Streep “Musk rtf the Heart” Hilary Swank - “Boys Don’t Your guess is as good as mine h the sounds of spring crowd The aick of the quip The acceptance eech cut off by the swelling music ! We’re talkin’ Oscars Growe and Peon and Spacey - lUkm’Oscan Bering Moore and Swank-We’re talkin’ Oscars This March 26th y' ' v1' !' i ! V 'I As with neariy every year in the last 10 to 15 die list is a lather ayptic one Know what I mean? Let me illustrate: You’re iittmg on the couch this Sunday night You’re well into the cheese puffs and ouioo his salute to die best pic with South Park- hire ish animation and Cartman claiming he Ves dead people” (A song from “South Put: Bigger Longer and Uncut” is nominated for an Oscsr - that’s what sparked the idea) They are just heading into the best supporting actor and actress categories when you consult your y Oscar list As you read down you get to the name Samantha Moitoo who is nominated for her performance in “Sweet and Lowdown” Perplexed you turn to your pal on the couch next to you and ask “What is ‘Sweet and Lowdown?” He shnigs and you turn your glazed look toward Billy once more Sound familiar? This little scenario is all too familiar lately with the Oscars It used to be that you would look at the list and such a nomination from a film no one had heard of didn’t have a snowball's chance Then recently we had James Coburn winning far “Affliction” another film'which went virtually unseen It used to also be fair- I handy-dand- ly easy to pick the best picture winner then last year a little flick called “Shakespeare in Love” took home the top prize (It also took a slew of others including best actress and best original screenplay) How can one pick the win nen this year? I don’t know really I don’t All I can do is try to shed some light on a few nominees Let’s start with fee big boy shall we? C “American Beauty” The Cider House Rules” The Green Mile” The Insider” “The Sixth Sense” What a list eh? The real surprise is that these films all went into wide release which is more than can be said far die put few years If you look at the list a bit more closely you will notice a pattern that has surfaced of hue You have a couple of political pieces: One modem (The Insider”) and one retro (The Cider House Rules”) the black comedy (“American Beauty”) the creepy yet overly popular drama (The Green Mile”) and the creepy dark drama (The Sixth Sense”) Last year a major dak horse — and a comedy to boot — (“Shakespeare in Love") took home the gold Who will take home the statue this year? The smart money Cty” INTHE PARK : Michael Flood is on “American Beauty” but my hope lies with The Sixth Sense” (Sony emotion usually when takesover withme there is no money riding on it at least) Best Actor Nominees Russell Crowe - The Insider? Richard Farnsworth - “The Straight Story” Sean Penn - “Sweet and Lowdown” Kevin Spacey - “American Beauty” ' Denzel Washington The Hurricane” Another dark horse took this well — one away last year Roberto Benigni for his wonderful performance in “Life is Beautiful” This year? Well I have a fat rtf's gripe There is one performance that went total- : u s u ly ignored just because he’s not what is considered a leading man Any guesses? (My hand wu tipped in (he bert picture category) Yep Bruce Willis gave us a pemumance in The Sixth Sense” that was light years beyond anything he has done in the past His wonderful- ly touching deep performance was shunned in favor of another which by the way was terribly overrated Denzel Washington’s work in The Hurricane” is nothing new for us we’ve seen it all before Given the list however the smart money is on Spacey for “American Beauty” Best Actress Nominees Annette Bening - “American Beauty” Janet McTeer Streep is no stranger to die nomination circle but out of 11 nominations she has only given two acceptance speeches Will this be ho year? Rr “Mis Holland’s Opus” erlmean “Musk of the Heart?” ftubaMy not Besides she deserved it much more far her performance in “One TYue Thing” for which she was nominated last year This is where the real cries of confusion begin First Janet ' McTfeer in “Tumbleweeds?” Second Julianne Moore in The End of the Affair?” Third Hilary Swank in “Boys Don’t Cry?” Less people have seen these three performances combined than the number rtf peo-p- k win like Jar Jar Binks in the last “Star Wan” flick Where is die smart money? Regardless of the fact that nobody saw it Hilary Swank’s performance in “Boys Don’t Cry” leads die race : Best Supporting Actor Nominees Michael Caine - The Cider House Rules” Tom Cruise -- “Magnolia” Michael Clarke Duncan CONTINUED ON ' Watt Disney Presents 2 Toy Story n - fcOO Sat 140- - 340 - 5:10 Frfc 5:10-7:-10 7:10-0- 40 Matinee $ All Arf&Qmde iMiTHtjk'1!
