unde Photo courtesy of Lew and Kathie Lamb A worker at a Russian orphanage fills baby bottles with a diluted mixture of mashed potatoes and carrots the closest thing they have to formula when the mission ended But the mothers themselves say it's about children in the hospitals and orphanages of Vladivostok — a city in the southeastern end of the Russian Federation where Europe and Asia meet Rebecca Rasmussen of Hyde Park has not personally met the children that she is now trying to help But she has heard their story from her uncle Lew Lamb of Afton Wyo who served a humanitarian LDS mission in the Russian Federation She formed a committee and they passed the word along Already the story has spread inspiring Cache Valley residents to donate more than $6000 — at last count — to help the children in the Babies sleep up to six to a crib in an orphanage for disabled children area of Vladivostok This is their story When Russia’s economy crashed last summer the disaster created a number of tiny refugees Impover- ished mothers entered maternity hospitals at Vladivostok to give birth then abandoned their babies there Other parents took their sick children to hospitals where government-pai- d doctors could minister to them But it is up to the patients' families to bring warm blankets and buy medicine something many families cannot afford to do Hospital workers watched women hold their dying babies until they passed away the parents could afford to do little else Often it is only the very strongest who recover said Andrey Grishin a doctor from Vladivos- tok who met Genesis prophecy By Kenneth W Godfrey Two yean ago when Utahns celebrated the sesquicentennial of the arrival of the Mormon Pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley I sometimes said that I learned more about those folks than I really wanted to know This year is the 132nd anniversary of that event Native Americans whose ancestors inhabitated the Great Basin for hundreds of years before the arrival of the Latter-da- y Saints probably yawn or two at our making such a big fuss over those 1847 newcomers Still most of us enjoy celebrations and the excuse to miss work It is appropriate too to think about our past and the contributions Continued on Page 22 Friday Outdoors: A park of their own erf those who made this region what it is today whether they be oldcomers or newcomers I still like to remember those Mormon pio- neers The trek across America by covered wagon and handcart still captures the imagination of many Americans and monographs magazine articles and books continue to appear chronicling new aspects of the westward movement of our ancestors Richard White and other historians have informed us that many Latinos moved north not west and Orientals traveled east not west to reach California Nevada Montana Oregon Wash- ington and Utah White and other “new Western historians” so-call- ed argue too that the lands our ancestors inhabited were not empty as early historians would have us believe but that there were thousands of Native Americans who called this region home It appears there is still much to team about the Great Basin's past even for those of us who sometimes believe we have read and heard it all Recently Melvin L Bashore wrote an article about the Mormon Pioneers and snakes which seemed to plow new ground We all know that our primal parents Adam and Eve encountered a serpent in the Garden of Eden Eve's descendcnts were told that they would have the power to bruise the serpent’s head though he would bruise a heel or two The descendcnts of Eden’s serpents did bruise a pioneer's heel or two Isaac Groo Bashore informs us was walking through prairie grass one day on his way to Utah when he saw a “monstrous" rattlesnake coiled up in a position to strike Groo quickly cut a big stick and to quote his diary "bruised the serpent’s head” thus fulfilling a prophecy first heard by Mother Eve The Nebraska plains were “thick with prairie rattlesnakes” The overlanders See GODFREY on Page 22 Features: - ‘j 752-212- 8r 1 |
