Show Page 14 — The Herald Journal Logan Utah Wednesday May 5 1999 Relationships from birth to 3 set tone for life By Trent Wentz of how we might best confront and We have all been ihocked by the events of the last few months where many have lost their lives victims of gratuitous violence Shootings in our schools gang warfare and the innocent destroyed simply for being present in our society How can this be? We must hire more police we must put metal detectors in our schools We need police to walk our school halls we need more counselors and crisis workers Can't the courts do something about this? We must do away with all gunsl The comments go on and on as the nation grapples with how to resolve the tragedies and prevent their future occurrence Then of course almost all of us ask “Who is to Warner I do not think there is any one answer to this issue rather it seems a number of factors may be contributing to the problem Perhaps if we approach it systematically we can identify what the precipitators are and thereby gain the knowledge diminish what we find happening One serious problem we have is that in those first two to three magical yean of life more and more children are failing to develop attachment — bonding — to their parents These are children who quoting from the March 1999 issue of The Forensic Examiner “are left without the most basic and important foundation for healthy development They are flooding our child welfare and juvenile justice systems with an overwhelming arm of problems —emotional behav- ioral social cognitive physical and moral— and growing up to perpetuate the cycle with their own children4 The article Kids Who Kill goes on to say if the bonds of attachment are not solidified in the' first two to three years of life the infant can grow into adult hood without ever forming meaningful emotional relationships This may result in responses of chronic anger poor impulse control and lack of remorse for one’s actions The child appears whole but inside they are hollow and lack the ability to bond provide service or love someone else They are oppositional negative in their core beliefs and blame others for their own mistakes They lack faith compassion and remorse Conversely solid attachment relationships provide safety and protection for the young They allow for teaching of trust exploration of one's environment and the ability to develop healthy social relationships Attachment increases coping skills the generation of solid values and the develm opment of positive These become particularly important when we realize the opposite in attachment-disordered children are manipulaself-estee- tive relationships intense anger and behaviors impulsive Furthermore many experts believe as ve USU writers earn scholarships Creative writing and the environment — that niche has been Kinkead selection committee chair and associate dean of the filled by only a handful but College of Humanities Arte and Social Sciences serves as an information their core even the heroes and heroines participate in the same behavior Unfortunately our news media tends to feed at the trough of sensationalism Perhaps no more telling effect of the influence of the media can be noted than the recent tragedy in Colorado which has resulted in a number of copycat attempts throughout the nation A Malechek Annie Malechek daughter of John and Karen Malechek of several writing programs Lundahl is a native of Logan and is a sophomore in watenhed science Her past and present involvement in environmental programs and studies demon- strates her activism and commitment She has participated in the Teton Science School and served as a volunteer naturalist at the Stokes Nature Center Roos is a senior majoring in English education She has been involved in a number of environmental groups focusing her work on protecting the environment what hurricane Mitch destroyed A graduate of Sky View High School Annie Malechek is taking part in the trip as part of a class in which students will also examine the environmental health and socioeconomic impacts of the hurricane Students also will evaluate the hurricanes impact on the eco-touris- m industry and work with local organizations and scientists involved in rebuilding infrastructure or doing analysis of coastal zone ecosystem damage To raise money for the trip and to buy supplies students and the college's volunteer center held a campus garage sale and several drawings I would propose at least part of the answer then to combating some of this destructiveness we are finding in our children lies in the arms of good parents who literally take the infant in their arms love them care for them and watch over them and by so doing assist foe child in the development of bonding and attachment relationships both with diem and with a proactive society This would be foe parent who would set limits lovingly but firmly This would be a parent who communicates their love and affection to foe child and adolescent Hus would be the parent who doesn't allow the media to educate in ways that destroy personal integrity This is the parent who on bringing a child into the world recognizes the obligations and sacrifice necessary to turn out a good product and then acts upon this knowledge TMnt Wentz Is draclor of swvtoM tor Cache and Rtoh counties of Bear River Mental Health 8er- -
