Show Thank you ctmluiued from page 2 Zahller viewpoint Editor Mike who write a newspaper simply called The Eagle Having the opportunity to volunteer a little of my time there kept my editing skills up allowed me to meet some very special people and to occasionally shirk some coaching duties The CEU communication department is an example of solidarity mutual cooperation and achievement Some other good friends: Curtis Icard who helped me through a tough year and listened to me really listened John Serfustini is a credit to this institution We are lucky to have him here He works tirelessly for anyone who asks him to do anything Henry Zwick was a fellow sci-- fi fanatic and I hope and Star Trek he forgets I still have some of his videos Nick Famiglictti wasn't afraid to challenge my ideas and statements with bold counterproposals and incessant criticism Nick made me remember Liebniz's remark that an argument conducted in good will between two friends makes life worth living Steve Bringhurst helped out the team a great deal and I’d known him for ten years prior to coming here so it would truly be a shame to forget him now There are too many students to mention so I will practice my bureaucracy gestures by pretending none of them exist This tactic generally seems to work If I've forgotten anybody I'm sorry Oh yeah— all the folks at EdNct! That was a blast Finally I am proud to have been able to watch CEU "catch up to the 20th century on the eve of the 21st" and to be a part of the first Utah institute of higher education to be run by a woman of color Moreover I long for the day when saying such things are completely unnecaward-winni- Some expectations for student government ng X-fil- es As Barry Maxfield's article Student Government: Take the challenge illustrates there are serious expectations that face the recently elected student body officers at least from a nontraditional standpoint However from a traditional standpoint there are also issues that face ASCEU next year and the years to come The first thing ASCEU will have to face is the lack of student It was frequently argued throughout this empowerment year primarily in the recent elections- - that students don't have a voice in the affairs at CEU Some examples of this include (but aren't limited to ) mystery fee sheets lack of representation for the unmarked problem violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act attempts to silence the newspaper writers mystery mcatloaf in the cafeteria the monopolized relationship between housing and meal plan fees and finally a lack of activities that meet the demands of students It is in both the hands of the students and ASCEU to make sure that we have a strong say in what goes on around campus I challenge ASCEU to take more strides towards uniting the students and organizing more forums so that students arc seen as a strong force at CEU Secondly ASCEU has to do something about the lack of Part of the accountability on the part of the administration reason student empowerment is so vital an issue is because there needs to be more checks and balances between the student body and the administration Right now the administration controls numerous aspects of our student life They control what classes we're required to take They control which hours we can enter facilities that were built solely for -- non-tra- our usage They fail to tell us what our fees are and where they’re going They seem to contradict themselves in their handling of the unmarked police car They fail to adequately meet the nationwide ADA standards They pursue students solely for expressing their viewpoints to the student body to the brink of harassment To boot the administration gets away with most if not all of the occurrences ASCEU is solely responsible for ensuring that students have a voice that bellows loud and long in the ears of the administration and it's up to the new student officers to ensure just that Finally I want to add a personal comment to those of you who think that the newspaper is too negative (for there seems to be a lot of you out there creeping in the shadows of the campus walls) I have never seen such a dedicated school newspaper in my life The sole reason being that this newspaper staff tries its damndest to make sure that students are aware of what is going on at CEU In the process the newspaper is an open microphone for student beliefs and viewpoints A microphone I have jammed on a time or two Next time you think that this newspaper is too negative I want you to remember one important fact: all school newspapers arc responsible primarily for reporting on what is going on in their schools That means that if what the newspaper is writing is that is a mere reflection of CEU itself then negative Based on this notion my final challenge for ASCEU is to work more with the newspaper staff so that together we can make a difference at CEU Let us hear what you have to say Let us share ideas and come up with effective strategies to unite this student body This is my Christmas wish list and I hope Santa comes early above-mention- ed this year essary said this when I came and I still believe it today Young people are living in a time of immense change They will be the agents of that change All existing ' institutions and structures all traditional sources of authority are under questioning right now as it should be I hope the instructors here will continue to “have the backs" of the bright student body at CEU as they venture into their hitherto unknown empowerment You will be in my prayers: please keep me in yours I Act discussed by the first secretary of Cuban Interests Section in Washington DC Helms-Burto- n Dagoberto Rodriguez Barrera
