the tradition of the editor-in- chief to write hisher obituary or last rites in the final issue I would like to believe that I have not been the typical editor and seeing that I am still very much alive and hope that 1 will be for a long time I would like to reminisce on this past year When the word was out that I was going to be the editor I was excited I was going to have a chance to make a difference and hopefully change The Eagle for the better Although I can lake partial credit for the idea of going to computer pagination the actual transformation was by no means my doing Former humanities chairperson Brent Haddock gave us his old 40 MB hard disk drive and purchased the staff a larger screen and keyboard Matt Gwyther the computer genius then produced new mass heads and along with the advisor taught the staffhow to operate the Pagemaker system I can honestly say that it is quite possible that without Matt the paper would have never been upgraded Like every journalist I wanted to cover all the controversial stories On several occasions I was on a debate trip and unable to attend class Susan Polster the newspaper advisor assigned the first heated story to Jaren Holder At first I was hurt I was hoping that she would have saved the juicy story for me It wasn't till I read Jaren's article that I was thankful for what Susan did I say this because Jaren is one of the best news writers I have mcL Jaren has covered articles such as the Amos Richardson controversy and Weber State trying to drop its football program Jaren's articles are unbiased and filled with facts No matter how much heat Jaren is put under he has never succumbed to pressure Jaren has followed the Journalists Creed to the last letter The only regret that 1 have is that Jaren has decided to transfer to Salt Lake Community College for economic reasons CEU is losing one of its top writers and will be missed In spite of his decision I am positive that if Jaren decides to pursue a career in journalism that we will see his name in headlines for numerous awards for outstanding coverage of issues This year we have the best JC editorial staff in the state This is not only my opinion but a fact Ryan Hoglund and Joshua Ulibanri received first and second respectfully at the community college journalism conference held in Salt Lake City No matter how much grief they received this year Ryan and Josh continued to write excellent articles There are very few people who have the courage to print their beliefs in a newspaper If you think I am wrong go through this year's issues and count how many “letters to the editor" there are I can tell you right now there aren’t enough to count on both your handsWith Ryan Hoglund as next year’s Viewpoint editor the college is in for a great year filled with insight into the social and political issues rocking the world Another face I will miss is Randall Harrington's I in pursuit of a sports article where proper English is used and Randall wanting to become Sports Illustratcd's next college journalist have bumped heads more than once this year In the end I have to admit that Randall has educated me in sports lingo On lop of that Randall’s constantly crude but always witty attitude has reminded me that if I can't have fun in the journalism room then it's not worth spending until five ajn working on the paper Not everything is as sweet as it sounds Being on the journalism staff is hard work Journalists are constantly faced with interviewing the most difficult people let alone all the late night hours spent producing the paper If it weren't for Danny Kouranous Renee Prcssctt and the rest of my staff you would see my face on America's Most Wanted as a serial killer who plagues the CEU campus Last but not least I must commend Susan Polster for her constant dedication There have been times when it would have been easy for an advisor to through up her hands and quit Not Susan In spighl of The Eagle broken-dow- n having the most computers and equipment Susan has guided and helped her students become the best journalists they can be Susan has always stood behind her journalists She has taught me to stand up for what I believe in and never to back down At the awards assembly I was honored as being the outstanding journalism student of the year but as you can see I really have done nothing out of the ordinary It is this year's Eagle staff who deserves the recognition Without them there would not be a paper nor would have The Eagle been recognized as one of the top two community college newspapers in Utah Good luck and a successful future to alL out-date- d The playground equipment outside of the College of Eastern Utah's Computer Science Building is not contrary to immature for It students popular this provides the optimal balance "It works for the students and the parents of our kids as a homeroom or an area where they feci comfortable coming any time " The preschool serves as a laboratory for CEU students studying for their certificate in early childhood development applied science degree or to transfer to get their degree in elementary and early childhood education Activities are centered around being appropriate for muscle language science math cognitive social and emotional development Each of the college students who works in the preschool prepares lesson plans and serves as head teacher during the quarter giving them hands on exposure to education They must put in many hours preparing a parent letter lesson plan buying groceries and training other students for the activities Brown stated The family education center is growing as a result of regular grants it receives through the CEU Turning Point center The small library will receive a cataloging center soon and more books he concluded Ullbarrl (coni from page 2) I found myself complaining about how bored I was I guess I know why If there is a morale to this story it would be that people should not condemn others for being apathetic when they themselves are There are many people that I met at this school who 1 hope will forever be my friends The most influential person that I met was Jory Johnson I wish all people could have at least one Jory in their life He was my first and only roommate We pulled the occasional (nightly) Debate brought us together and when I left we remained friends If I could give Jory anything it would be the same he gave me: The confidence to know that I can be anything I want Jory tells this to everybody unfortunately I think he often forgets that he can do the “all-nighte- r" same I will never forget Danny Kourianis He has an honest and positive personality When Danny and I first became friends he would never defend himself never Now Danny is always tooting his own horn I hope I showed Danny that nothing is more important than your honor and reputation A final person I will have a lasting impression of is Elisha Ray She is a bit of an enigma to me She is a chameleon and I do not know if I like it or not The Viewpoint that appeared in the Jan 13 edition was credited to me but it was not my article Elisha took my original viewpoint and drastically altered it Granted she was the editor but when I looked at the article the next day I honestly could not recognize it She is a chameleon in that she wrongs people and the next day acts as if everyone are friends I do not know if that is right or wrong but I do know that most people deserve second chances (And third chances and forth) If you hear the song we sing You will understand! You hold the key to love and fear In your trembling hand Just one key unlocks them both lt‘s there a your command The CEU debate team won more rounds this year than any other JC in the history of collegiate debate They may have been right in debate rounds but they were wrong in January dead wrong Each member closed their eyes pretending to be blinded by an injustice I guess they lacked the courage to challenge an authority I suspect that each worried more about their own position (on the van) than about right or wrong It was unfortunate individually three or four of them are the greatest people I have ever met As a group they are as selfish as anybody I know They put winning first and everything else was secondary With friends like that who needs enemies? Congratulations they earned what they wanted with or without “Snoop Joshie Josh and Dr Dar" I have often been criticized for my beliefs and for my desire to make my beliefs known I make no apologies for my opinions nor do I apologize for vocalizing them A little over two years ago I was told that my opinion did not count It was my senior graduation and I was not happy that I was going to be subjected to a foreign prayer I had no choice in the matter Hie senior class officers voted for a prayer and that was the way it was going to be I had planned a peaceful protest when I was pulled aside by my counselor and told "You had better watch yourself You will not be in that auditorium if you don't do what you are told" It was that day that 1 vowed never to be silenced again I will never let someone speak for me when I have something to say I will never allow an injustice to be done until I do all that I can to stop it If that makes me than so be it I am proud of myself and radical or my opinions I will never be told that my opinion does not count again They call me and others in my age group "Generation X" To me that means "Generation eXccllcnt” And I will always try to live up to the term excellent Even if I have to step on a few toes and bum a few bridges I thouroughly believe that every bridge burned is a lesson learned Come on people now Smile on your brother Everybody get together!
