Show Th Eagle -- Thursday October 29 1992 Page I For the people? You have to remember that the Theatre Department had this scheduled along time ago Consider that they do five shows a year and ASCEU docs hundreds of activities doesn't seem a little insensitive of ASCEU to do this? Another big problem with the situation is that ASCEU in planning this activity didn't follow proper procedure The CEU policy and procedure manual states that for an activity lobe placed on the calender in has to go through a programs committee On the committee sits one representative from student government the Dean of Student Life and various facualty members from the different departments This did not happen The reason this is known is that a number of die Theatre Department sits on this committee ASCEU acted like they can do whatever they want anytime they choose ASCEU lied to the Theatre Department Supposedly the student government is there to meet the needs of the students It's there responsibility to give equal status to all clubs and departments inside the CEU curriculum I don't see this happenindividualists whose only ing All I see is a bunch of self-absorb- ed desire is to increase their own social standing by creating bigger and o Activities opc speech (continued horn page 2) (continued from page 2) better activities Social activities are important but not at the than social expense of integrity I also believe there is more to life needs What docs our student government really do? Besides fun fun fun what other needs and services do they meet Here at CEU we need much more than just activities Where are student counseling services that practically every other college in Utah has? Where is medical facilities or stafT doctors to help take care of sick students? Where are places that students can just hirng out (not everyone loves pool and video games)? Our student government should really represent us by trying to get us these services! But that's a later Right now ASCEU should do the right thing Well the situation has been resolved sort of President Petersen used his muscle to at least get the spook alley's times' changed ASCEU should still do the right thing They promised not to schedule conflicting activities They should either move it's dates or cancel it completely In lieu of their actions so far neither will probably happen (continued from page 2) by saying "In the ASCEU constitution it is the student government's This was not done by last year's student government This put us in the situation that we are now in Politicians often make promises that aren't kept Here is one that will be There will be 10 registered dubs on campus by Wednesday Nov 4 1992 mid our goal is to double last year's clubs by the end of the year by reaching a total of at least 26" Efforts to solve these problems are occurring but as far as the activities and clubs are concerned we as students need to make sure our voices are heard by student government If we want the caliber of activities to improve we need to let the student government officials know about our concerns Even if the number of dubs does come up will it compare to the opportunities at other colleges? Amazingly these yuppie throwbacks from the hippie age are destroying the very thing they were fighting for back in the 60s: freedom of speech A professor at Gcmson University recently found himself demoted for encouraging his students to seek out religion and sharing his Protestant faith within the confines of his office It has become well within the norm for professors to openly share beliefs in spiritism levetation and other new age practices However when traditional Christian ethics are discussed it becomes a matter of political incorrectness with severe ramifications Blacks are no longer Blacks but People of Japanese or Chinese ancestry must be addressed as Asian American Indians are now called Native Americans and Caucasians can be called every name in the bode With such drastic limitations even the most linguistic faux pas Such blunders are openly attacked in campus publications and administrative circles often resulting in punishment or suspension Students must constantly police every thought or action before expressing it It is no wonder why this movement has been labeled "the new fascism” Not only does the PC movement violate First Amendment rights but it also serves to build brariers between various minority and majority groups George F Willis continued his addressed by saying "To those who say we are threatened by a suffocating ’hegemony' of Western civilization's classic challenge of finding common ground on which Americans can stand togcthcr-n- ot the fenced-off turf for irripatches of table groups but the common ground of citizenship in the naAfrican-America- ns tion” PC advocates have drawn mi- nority lines so tightly that communication has become virtually impossible A movement meant to guarantee equality for minority groups has instead created new ground for racial sexual and religious animosity Martin Luther King's dream of a nation where individuals were judged based on their merit has been all but lost in the modern-da- y pursuit to elevate minorities at the expense of unity In the words of essayist Pico Ayer "We are threatening to become the land of the free with an asterisk" Advertise In the Eagle classifieds $3
