campus itself creating a very prospective future for CEU according to Vice Resident Bob Torgerson Torgerson spoke of additional programs for CEU including one very interesting example of hands on experience seen in a special vocational program where students actually build homes If carpentry is not your interest then you may find interest in several programs where four If c® year colleges in Utah bring their programs to CEU These programs include nursing where a master's degree would be available a business vocational program along with several others Hopefully these programs should be installed for the 1993 school year he said Many higher education schools in Utah are considering a semester system in which the quarters are four months long instead of three At CEU "I would expect there to be some serious discussion concerning the semester system" he added Further speaking of program expansions Torgerson said you build it by Matthew Harward ef An expanding CEU campus was the hot topic at the CEU Board of Trustees meeting held October 12 Due to a rapidly increasing student body that grows every year the board translated that concern into plans for building new student housing facilities CEU is operating at 100 percent full occupancy up from 90 last year That means in terms of people of about 70 more new faces this year than the in 2 school year Full time enrollment at meeting time was 2500 plus 91-9- students The reasons for the influx of so many new students is linked to one main reason The bigger state colleges and universities are unable to meet the needs of the growing number of entering freshman students Schools such as Utah State University of Utah and Brigham Young University are closing the doors on students because of full capacity CEU is tcruie ground to meet the needs ot these people CEU offers unique experiences not found in the larger schools such as smaller class sizes with a less student to professor ratio These benefits include more with the instructor who actually knows your name CEU Resident Dr Michael A Petersen is convinced that it is mandatory that CEU expand to one-on-o-ne the closing of an elementary school the oldest one being Dunam Therefore it is feasible that if the school board wishes to sell it it would be natural for CEU to purchase the building being that it is adjacent to the college he continued As CEU's enrollment continues to increase there will certainly be a need for more student housing A new dormitory project is currently under the final phases and the construction should begin in March and will hopefully be ready for next fall he added Although some dorm residents find the strict policy of the dormitory management to be offensive the well controlled dorms have been found to contribute greatly to the low crime rate on campus the vice president said Hie placement over the summer of more lighting should also contribute to the crime rate which is according to campus security the lowest in the state This is definitely something students should be proud of and prospective studlmts should weigh in their decision to attend CEU considering the growing crime rate on college campuses said Torgerson Twisting the night away they will come editor-in-chi- "We have a federal grant that will actually allow us to refurbish the telecommunications center" The center is located on the second floor of the Main Building Besides the telecommunications center other improvements in the Main Building include making the class rooms more inviting Seme fairly major renovation has already been made "My hope is to find additional funds this year to continue that renovation project" said Mr Torgerson Rumors of CEU purchasing Durrant Elementary are false although the decline in elementary students which is expected in the next few years may result in for you make room for these students “For CEU to keep growing it must build more residential housing" he said “we are looking at an opportunity to progress" The plan calls for three new complexes to be built over the (continued on page 7) President returns part time College of Eastern Utah President Michael A Petersen underwent surgery Sept 1
