Show Freedom of speech challenged bj Choa Carver editorial editor Each day that I walk the halls of the College of Eastern Utah I hear the voices grow louder and louder and each time what those voices are saying seem to be more and more familiar In other words students and faculty choose your side Hie war is about to begin It seems that a member of the Price community who also serves on a governing council at the college would like to explore the possibility of reviewing the material in the Eagle's editorials prior to its publication For those of you unfamiliar with the constitution and its precepts this is what is known as censorship and is a blatant violation of our first amendment rights Sometimes I feel like we should get an enlarged copy of the constitution and hang it up somewhere on campus so three people that so conveniently ignore it would be forced to recognize our rights Let's start with what is at issue The point is that these privileged members of the community were offended by some of the material in the prior editorials In other words they find our opinions offensive Oh geeze Ward Do you think that we were a bit hind on the Beaver in last week's edition Look I doubt that I would like anything that you have ever been responsible for printing either so let's call a trace I will tolerate your ignorance of constitutional rights and you can tolerate my opinions All I can say is thank goodness for some level headed people in our administration Resident Michael Feteraen has given me a personal guarantee that for as long as he is President of this school there will be no censorship tolerated I guess it takes one man of importance to counteract a few petty people of relative unimportance 1 was warned by a faculty member to keep a level head while this and I am doing my best so for the benefit of our article composing less informed foes we shall review a bit of constitutional court precedence on this issue The last time the Supreme Court ruled on censorship of the college campus press was in the Antolini decision and the ruling was an emphatic "no" In other words you make a feeble attempt at restricting what I say and I am taking your — to court Well I'd say that makes the issue fairly clear cut wouldn't you? Most important of all is your children Do you really want to raise a group of kids in an environment where their rooms are searched randomly with dogs that can only have visitors prior to 9 pm and whose first amendment right of freedom of the press has been eliminated in the interest of not offending those in the general populace You will be creating a group of functionally retarded adults and then handing the reigns of die government over to them in about 15 years This may sound like a stretch but "exploring the censorship option" is the first step and we can not allow it to continue I am reminded of a song that has been heard in Sessions Honor Hall more than once Freedom of speech Let 'em take it from me Next they'll take it from you then what you gonna do Let 'em censor booh let 'em censor art Administration this is where the witch hunt starts Censor what we read we hear we learn and the booh will bum All I can say is that those of you who are considering censoring in anyway shape or form are wrong Don't you dare take my rights way What you do in your house is fine If you don't want td hear what I say then don't read the article but I am telling you right now Do Not Screw With My Constitutional Rights Now on to a more friendly note Some of you may have noticed last week's editorial posted on some doors upstairs in Sessions This gesture (which by the way encouraged me to believe that someone out there is actually reading) has prompted me to make some closing comments before we let the issue go I first want to thank you for the positive and negative feedback I got on the article Some of you may remember that in my first editorial I said that what I wanted from this column was response and you gave it to me It is a great feeling to see the students and even the faculty of CEU respond Secondly now that you have been as Kate Chopin would say "awakened” keep it up some power hungry self inflated local Know your rights and dont take them away from you Finally look to the portion of the paper that is referred to as Nielsen's Notes and notice how he refers to those engaged in this argument as "pathetic and trivial” All I can say is the day that Rich is right the day that fighting for your constitutional rights becomes trivial and pathetic is the day I am packing for Guam I can only hope that your attitudes are a bit more infonned Well I think I will la this go for now but remember only you can make the changes you want In the immortal words of Bob Marley "Get up Stand up Stand up for your rights" This is your editorialist Choa Carver signing off to you from Terminal One in room 111 in scenic Price Utah reminding you to "Always Do the Right Thing” la Editor's analysis flawed Dear Editor I am afraid Choa made a huge error in giving the problem of four girls aft Sessions Hiall top balling in his article suffused with analogies drawn between two female RA's and that of his delinquent spptochuckingdays I feel the was filled with mere allusions lo real issues personal interest and little or no handling of the real problem student rights Cmon QxMuanalysis is in your own words "bull —" unless it has supporting evidence First tfU I would like to thank Choa for giving significance to die problem we da have in the dorms the lack of adherence to the rales by the RA's inhabitants and the homing department Referring to the editorial on the breach of contract in terms of the dogs) And no this is na confined to level two of Sessions HalL In my limited experience Sessions hall if na the other dams is as controlled an environment as Bangladesh! I would also like to point out that the housing deportment is the least guilty in this area No I dona think this means we need more Gestapo-tac-tic- s to control the dorms but rather we need reasonable rales that people can understand the logic of and be mature enough to ar-ti- de fdlow-Hopcftill- CEU housing department supersedes student rights acted independently they are still his responsibility Perhaps the resident assistants should heed the words of Samuel Clemens "Nothing so isneeds reforming as other people's habits" Were Mark Twain alive and A controversy has begun on campus over the invasion of privacy on what in I on campus he would ssy "nothing so needs reforming is the housing about have to much dorms the sue dona say goes CEU I am quite satisfied with the academic environment but the hous- contract” On that alone he would earn my vote as student body president By the way President Eric Bisqucra you may consider this article ing issue is s matter worthy of treatment the first to be placed in your suggestion box what can you do for the I do na live in campus housing and some may feel that this issue does not concern me The truth is what the housing department does housing inmalu? is "Innocent until proven guilty" is an off used phrase that has little has a very deep and long reaching effect on everyone who attends or meaning in our society When rooms are searched without probable planning to attend CEU cause there is a presumed guilt on the part of the authorities Civil First there are the students Most college students as freshmen are 18 or rights do not begin at 21 It strikes deep concern for the health of our They are experiencing freedom from mom and dad learn in to for the first time their lives They like eaglets who must society when those "certain inalienable rights" we are guaranteed can be superseded by the small print on a contract There is s rumor in the fly are learning to conduct themselves in an adult manner in wind that there may be an attempt brewing to suppress the Eagle women and is men are This na to say they are childish but they their teens Yes that puts a clearer light on the issue We are dealing newspaper's criticisms of the housing department Invasion of privacy teen-agecommendable students and Most do the time a these of with censorship? If Stalin could see us now he would be pleased to job know his principals are being rekindled conducting themselves There are times however when the suppressed childin of the This brings us to drag sniffing dogs K-- 9 commandoes designed to burst surface come a to bubbling urges of excontrol the CEU drag problem I think this move will do irreparable like exuberance The controversial watertight in the dorm is a good damage to the image of the school I am na advocating sticking our ample is the heads in the sand on the drag issue but why take aspirin before 1 agree with Joe Carver labeling those students as cheerleaders you Methodists I cannot have a headache? Leave Rin-T- in Rambo lo the inner cities same as attributing all campus crime to in I have a story that may illustrate the consequences of taking drastic help but wonder what would have happened had the participants the problems It occurred in Glendora steps to cure virtually watertight been members bf the forensics team Would we aU have small bedroom steamr California are a just letting off community about 20 minutes by freeway chuckled at their antics and raid "they reis lived I In Glorioso Gkxioso Joe Los from an apartment complex of 900 people of defense Carver's with Angeles I disagree and have his assistants (continued on page 3) though they may sponsible for the actions of by Sam Pittman staff editorialist a rs neo-adultho- od left-hand- ed non-existe- nt y aid in this " theRHA will Why Choa is so upset about these labels on girls who happen to lead ns in cheers ni never know I have heard him use the same words on the same people Ba he does bring up another valid point should that be a consideration in the report of the breaking of a rule? The answer quite obviously is no Since resident managers na assistants are the ones who do the actual "write up” this was even more inappropriate Of course the "victims" of the write up were na referred to solely as "cheerleaders” ba were also referred to by name Choa is cared however labels ARE stupid considerations especially when the only possible use for them would be some malignant form classification that Big Brother designed to report how naughty certain behavioral groups can be after midnight on a school night I feel thatChoa's counter-exampof labelling though primarily offensive to many served a (contlaaed on page 3) a le |
