Show irnmamm Ih ursdaTlanuir131 1JV71 Gallery East features “Unison with Nature” by Sam Pittman relief and motion Sullivan's design system was based on plant forms - flowers pods leaves and vines - - and included Gothic revival Egyptian and geometric influences staff writer "Louis H Sullivan: Unison With Nature” a display featuring 40 original fragments of building ornaments designed by the architect between 1881 and 1919 will begin its run at College of Eastern Utah's Gallery East Feb 1 Included in this traveling exhibit are pediments door panels ceiling screens elevator grilles windows and other works Some of the featured pieces are reproductions Examples of work executed in various materials including terra cotta wood copper and iron come from residences banks theaters stores office buildings andalibrary Sullivan a posthumous recipient of the AIA Gold Medal is best known for his contributions to the development of the skyscraper and for his intricate and organic architectural ornament Evolving in terms of detail uw Two pieces which illustrate the scope of Sullivan's work are included in the display The fust is an example of a limestone lintel from Chicago's Reveil building The second is a delicate and lacy ornamentation from a bronze teller's wicket at a Minnesota bank constructed in 1907 ornamentation from buildings slated for destruction Nickel lost his life in his efforts to preserve the works of Sullivan killed in the collapse of the old Stock Exchange Building in Chicago The collection now numbers several hundred pieces from 28 different buildings the collection conserves and restores these works most of which have been weathered through the effects of time environmental dirt and pollution vandalism and previous restoration efforts The Louis H Sullivan ArThe presentation of this chitectural Ornament Collection is travelling exhibit is made possible housed at Southern Illinois by grants from the Illinois Art Council the Institute of Museum University at Edwardsville The collection was instituted in Services and the SIUE Graduate School's grant to the SIUE the early 1960s to systematically save as many of Sullivan's best University Museum Its apworks as possible For more than pearance at Gallery East is made 20 years Richard Nickel an arpossible by a generous grant from the Utah Arts Council and Nachitectural photographer and historian negotiated with building tional Arts Endowment The exhibit is organized by Landau owners wrecking crews and Faaturad In Gallery East will be fragmenta workers to save tons of Sullivan's Travelling Exhibition Services ornaments ss the one above on Fab 1 ul v i As expected Hammer nails five music awards - I M t i I rt iV S V MC Hammer nailed five American Music Awards and a defensive Vanilla Ice won two as rap again showed itself as a major force in popular music during the annual awards show on Monday night in Los Angeles It maintained a celebratory spirit but many of the winners and presenters paid tribute to American forces Fighting in the Persian Gulf Hammer dedicated one of his trophies to the troops overseas He declared full support for them and said that he was an man The show also highlighted Gloria Estefan't Fust stage performance since she suffered a broken back in a bus crash March 20 1990 A standing ovation greeted the former lead singer for Miami Sound Machine Hammer swept five nominations in rap and the two m and blues categories and lost only two both to Phil Collins in pop-roc- k Janet Jackson entered with five nominations and won three trophies including favorite female artist in pop-roc- k and dance music Like Collins Jackson did not attend the event cx-Na- vy - '- L i ?
