Show Thursday April 5 1990 Injury plagued Eagles still hopeful by Richard Hlckmou sports editor The College of Eastern Utah came away with three strikes in the tournament played up in Ontario Ore but are looking to bounce back strongly when region play begins The Golden Eagles first game was played on March 29 against host team Treasure Valley Community College In the first two innings of the game CEU was only able to post one hit coming in the form of a double by Devin Hathaway but he was later picked off second base to end the in- ning In the third inning the Eagles looked as if they were going to blow an opportunity to get their first run of the game after a lead off hit by Steve Lesser Tom Dimmick followed up with a strike out and Jeff Jewkes hit the ball which looked to be an easy play for die Chukars third baseman but he booted the ban allowing Lesser to seme Kevin Szura and Will Scott followed with singles of their own but the inning was halted when Jeff Cisneros struck out The Eagles were held scoreless until the when Szura fifth-inni- Came Schedule ng g pounded a double and was later hit in by Randy Visser Li the CEU was able to send aU nine of their hitters to die plate but were only able to bring three of them across to score Brett Seager began the inning with a single before Lesser was walked With one out Jewkes lined a single over the second baseman's head scoring Seager for the Eagles third run Lesser and Jewkes scored before the inning was over and Scott picked up a base hit before the inning ended on a Hathaway Sixth-innin- strike out The Eagles put up another run in the seventh-innin- g when Seager followed with the a Lesser and single inning opened up up with one as Jewkes his well than picked up second RBI when he lined the ball into left field scoring Lesser Scott flew out to center field to end the inning CEU was held scoreless for the final two innings of the game and TVCC held on to win the game 12-- 6 Lesser went 3 for 3 with 1 RBI Seager was 3 for 5 and Jewkes went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's Scott was 2 for S and Szura finished 2 for 6 Dusty Nciman was on the mound and later relieved by Szura In game two against Oregon CEU sent Archibald to the mound hoping to get their first victory of the tournament The Eagles were held in check through the first four innings of the game collecting only one base hit behind some good pitching and good defense for Oregon In the g CEU scored one run on a Dusty Moody home run over the left field on a full count The Eagles were again held scoreless for the next two innings before Moody reached base on an error and three batters later was hit in by Szura The Eagles were unable to score in the final inning of the game and lost 2 CEU left 14 men on base in a two run performance in their second loss in the tournament Scott went 3 for 3 while teammates Lesser and Moody went 2 for 4 The Golden Eagles were hoping to snap back in game three and regain some respect from TVCC as they were set to match up with them for the second time in three days Shane Greenland was sent to the mound with the last gasp effort for a tournament win CEU was only able to score two runs in the game both coming in the Neiman picked up the first hit of the inning with a double but was tossed out when Max Mantle hit in to a fielder choice Mantle scored on a Szura hit and Jewkes picked up the Eagles only RBI with a single in to center field The inning ended on a Hathaway strike out The Eagles were held to only two hits in the remainder of the game and were unable to score losing the game 2 Neiman went 2 for 3 and Jewkes went 2 for 4 with 1 RBL Coach Dave Paur commented that his team looked a little rusty compared to the other teams in the tournament Treasure Valley had already played 26 games before the tournament and Oregon had 30 under their belts That's a lot of games considering we have only played in seven so far this season fifth-innin- 9-- fifth-inni- I'm 10 boredl Mow oftetTckTyou find youneiTrcpeaiin ihii statement?
