by Cordy West news editor The battle between the state legislators and teachers continues as legislators debate their options to fulfill teacher's demands within the Feb 15 deadline set by the UEA So far legislators have allocated a $1000 increase in teacher's salaries to show they are serious about helping teachers receive the funding they need to match the rising costs of medical insurance and cost of living However classified employees such secretaries bus drivers and food workers may not look forward to such an increase in their salaries Those supporting this issue made a strong appeal for equal consideration for die personnel No definite decisions will be made until near the close of the legislative session 'Feb 21 However this comes after the UEA deadline and legislators need to be able to satisfy teachers now with only a proposal and not a definite plan The problem the legislatures faces is not knowing exactly how much they can spend from their budget even after the spending ceiling which wu set last year is lifted Utah's legislators are soon expected to receive final tax revenue figures on which they will base final decisions on how much money education u non-teachi- Behunin Trophies trophies and more trophies Forensics team dominates Arizona tournament as the legacy continues Although it is illegal to remove Siguaro cactus from Arizona the College of Eastern Utah forensics team came home with 13 of them actually trophies shaped like Sag uaro cactus They won the first place sweepstakes trophy 12 individual trophies and four other awards toury CEU attended the nament at Central Arizona College Feb 3 with only part of its squad but placed first in the team sweep-stakwith 109 points Utah Valley Community College was second with 96 points and the University of Arizona wu third with 74 points One of the special categories at the meet wu the pentathlon in which all pwticipmts must enter five events CElTs Joe Carver placed first made the finals in all five of his events and won trophies in four of them Aimee Andersen also of CEU won the second place trophy in this competition placing in three of her events while Troy Hunt placed fourth In communication analysis Andersen wu first and Hunt third Carver placed first in impromptu and Andersen tied for third In extemporaneous it wu Carver taking second and Andersen third Carver picked up the second place trophy in two-da- 2-- es informative and third place in speaking to entertain Carrie Walken-horplaced fourth in that event Daniel Esperson placed third in poetry interpretation and in persuasive speaking Hunt wu third and Carver fourth CEU competitors missed the finals in six slots by a point Esperson in prose and drama interpreta- -' lion Andersen in speech to entertain Hunt and Wendi Mawhorter in prose and Brian Hunt in informative In the only team event at the tournament CEU's readers theater team of Troy Hunt Mawhorter and y Brian Dawes won the third place st tro-ph- new trophies were Twenty-fiv- e added to the collection of CEU's forensics team Feb 10 thirty schools mostly from Northern California attended the Modulo Junior College Forensics Tourna- u ment "Of the 30 schools 13 were community colleges and the rut were colleges and universities” CEU coach Neil Wanen reported "Not only were we the top junior college ” but we won the overall he said CEU competitors won the first place trophy in open division de sweep-stakes- bate the first dace in novice division debate and 20 trophies in individual events In some events there were three divisions: novice for the first-yecompetitors junior for the second year and open for juniors and seniors Because of this small number of entriu juniors had to compete in the senior or open division in some events "Junior and senior debate divisions were collapsed and our junior debaters had to compete against the senior division" Warren said The CEU team of Hall and Carver advanced to the quarter finals against the second team from San Francisco State and won In the semifinals they met the top team from SFS and won In the finals they were paired against a Santa Clara University team that had only (me lou during the entire two-da-y tournament and once again left with a victory The CEU debate team of Nathan Coulter and Daren Fairbanks missed the semifinal round of debate by speaker ar points In the novice division the CEU team of Andersen and Esperson won the first place debate trophy without a single lou in nine rounds their second consecutive first place victory (continued on page S) will actually sessions On Feb 19 President's Day Holiday teachers plan to rally on the Capital grounds If the strike does occur it will be a sporadic action Not all teachers are willing to strike because of the threat of suspension Substitute teachers who are employed during the strike will be offered $100 a day in the Wasatch Front school districts twice the going rate for substitutes This hu also angered teachers and made them think twice before crossing the picket lines Principals are also caught in the middle they are admonished to keep schools open at all costs Utah's education funding problem is a growing concern Utah hu the tightest funding for education of any state in the United States On the national average Utah supports 50 more students than any other state yet it hu the same number of workers on the national level Utah also hu the youngest average population and spends more per capita on education yet Utah still spends leu on each student u u Cancer researcher next speaker in Excellence in Science Series Cancer researcher and Brigham Young University Associate Professor Scott R Woodward Ph-will be the next featured CEU alumnus in the Excellence in Science series funded by a grant from US West Foundation on Feb 22 His research hu been focused on generics of human disease particularly cancer Ini985 while working at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Utah Woodward identified a DNA marker that would ultimately be used to identify the gene for cystic fibrosis in the fall of 1989 "This marker hu been used exten- sively in research prenatal diagnosis of cystic fibrosis in the fetus and carrier identification in uymp-tomari- c individuals" he explained Recently Woodward and a group of researchers identified a DNA marker linked to the gene for polyposis coll a type of colon cancer He is also working on constructing a gene map for the human the identification and cloning of neuropeptides from Cone snails and the application of recombinant DNA technology to agricultural animals Woodward graduated from CEU in 1978 then in 1980 he earned his BS in biology and his PhD in genetics in 1983 at Utah State University He is also an adjunct
