Show The Eagle proves that they're for real in Phoenix tournament CEU By Dustin C Nelman staff writer After winning the Valley of the Sun Tournament in Arizona the College of Eastern Utah's men's basketball team returned home to take on BYU ) V in their first home game of the season while improving their record to 2 CEU opened up the tournament against Scottsdale Community College which turned out to be a very competitive game for both ball clubs But when all was said and done the Golden Eagles prevailed with a 60-5-6 victory "It was a good team effort nobody individually stood out" coach Ronnie Stubbs commented The game started at a slow tempo a pace that the Eagles are not used to playing The Eagles were able to build a four point lead at halftime over a team that was a lot better than most people anticipated The second half stayed at the same pace but the cagers were able to adjust their style of ball and won the game by the same four point margin In their second game CEU was pitted up against a toligh New Mexico Junior College team but as time ran out in this barnburner the Eagles ended with a 6-- 100-9- 5 win "They were a real good team but our guys just played too tough" Stubbs said Sophomore Culumbar "Bo" Ball went to work for the Eagles as he threw in 25 point and tore down eight rebounds CEU also received some fine efforts from freshmen guard Jermaine Haliburton who tossed in 18 points while sophomore Ryan Laws pitched in 16 points and sophomore Dana Adams contributed with 17 points In the championship game CEU played a battle with Phoenix Community College for thirty minutes before the Eagles could gather themselves and go on and blow them out by 21 points 8 "We played well as a team and if we continue to play that way we will be competitive and good things will happen" were Stubbs' feelings about the teams success Jermaine Haliburton and David Baldwin lead the Eagles with 22 points a piece pacing the team to the championship victory "Bo" once again pitched in his contributions with 14 points and 11 rebounds In their first home game of the season the Eagles were matched up against RYlTsJV squad CEU wu unable to open up any sonpf commanding lead for most of the game as the Cougars kept the game close But down the stretch CEU was able to run the floor and stop all of BYU's hopes winning the gamc93-7- 4 Dana Adams had a good game pitching in 14 points eight of which came in s s the way off and Baldwin added 20 points while Haliburton and Saunders Mabrey combined with 30 points and both playing a solid gamcon defense The Eagles open up Region 18 action on the road against Ricks College and North Idaho but will return to the BDAC December 15 and 16 to take on Salt Lake Community College and Utah Valley Community College see-sa- w 99-7- slam-dunk- alley-oop- Dana Adams (25) glvss tha fans an sxampla of how sxploslvs tha College of Eastern Utah's offense Is going to bs this season CEU went on to beat BYU JV 93-7- 4 photo by Lonnie Behunln Lady Eagles pick up much needed win by Richard Illckmon sports editor The Lady Eagles picked up a big victory against South Mountain College in the Valley of the Sun Tournament in Arizona to break a three game losing skid Before heading to the tournament the ladies squared up against Western Wyoming only to take a 34 point thrashing ending up on the short end of a 8 score But coach Dave Paur wu hoping his ladies could turn things around in a big way down in Arizona Unfortunately it didn't turn out the way he had hoped Their first game pitted them against Mesa Community College of Arizona Again CElTs hopes for their first victory of the season were brought to a cradling halt when Mesa 56-5squeaked by with a 3 win The Lady Eagles geared up one more time and hoped that this could be their day to win But when all wu said and done the Eagles were looking up at a 20 point deficit and could never recover losing 1 to Seward of Kansu The next day brought on their third match of the tournament and the Lady Eagles were hoping that the third game would finally bring them their charm When the game had ended CEU definitely left with a big grin on their faces capturing their first victory of the season proving that on this day the third game truly had their charm been brought with a 1 win over South Mountain College of Arizona The Lady Eagles have been letd thus far in scoring by Allison Jack-so- n who averages 175 points per game and 5 assists Kristy Bird Follows closely averaging 11 points a game while Pam Dupin averages 71-5- 82-4- 72-5- -
