Show Published by the students of the College of Eastern Utah m ICAC play commences this week Administration is hoping that $36 million renovation of Computer Science Business Building is funded by 1989 legislators by Scott Warren staff writer The fate of CEU's proposed business building was the topic of discussion at the November 21 Institutional Council meeting held in the Student Activity Center Alumni Room President Michael A Petersen appeared very optimistic when he stated that the y business building has been submitted for funding by the legislaplanned tors twice previously Petersen is still quite confident that the third lime is the charm for CEU The governor has already approved a S50 million bond which is to be dispersed among the budget priorities of which CEU is a part four-stor- $600000 allotted to remodel first floor At present the college has $600000 to begin construction on the First floor Bidding for the entire facility is to begin this week in hopes that the 1990 deadline can be reached The projected budget for the building is $36 million which includes landscaping parking and curbing If approved construction of the First floor will begin in the early part of 1989 The business building will consist of four floors The First floor will contain the computer lab family life and child development departments The second door will have business classes as well as the cosmetology dcparuncnL The third and fourth floor will divide the math social science and drafting departments The new facility is expected to serve 4045 percent of the student body each day which will enable the humanities and Fine arts departments to expand in the other buildings on campus The second point of discussion was this year’s higher education budget Council members listened to plans that will be executed if this year's Board of Regents request is approved Proposed budget 1s half of 1987's request The proposed budget for this year is a mild one according to council members as it is only half of last year's The proposed amount is $20 million for all higher education which will cover only the basic needs of the college 45 percent cost of living increase The main points of the budget are a 45 percent cost of living salary increase for teachers and staff a much needed funding to off-sgrowth of the school fundoff-sincrease fund new the inflation and a to nursing program ing to Tuition may increase by seven percent The funding for growth is badly needed as CEU expects to add 100 new students at the Price and San Juan campuses It is hoped that the proposed limited budget and enrollment increase will help regain losses caused by inflation Tuition will be increased by seven percent if the tuition reform is approved The increase e student ataverages out to be approximately $16 more per quarter for the tending CEU This is a very mild increase as compared to other colleges throughout the state According to investment reports CEU ranks second overall in the total budget allotted per student in the state system of higher education While still not definite reports of CEU’s future appear to be very good on the basis of a modest enrollment expansion CEU appears to be a bright spot in Utah's higher education problem et et full-tim- Nursing awaits approval By Gina Howard staff writer The future of CEU's two-yeRegistered Nursing program is still up in the air The program awaits approval from the State Board of Nursing and final approval from the State Board of Regents Donna Cartwright director of CEU's one-yclicensed practical nursing deport-ment says that the situation is being treated as if the program was already approved and that hopefully the program will begin fall ar ar i "Stretch" (44) does just that as he goes for two in the Eagles 104-7-5 romp of Western Wyoming l quarter of next year Two new faculty members will be hired and 1 1 new hour classes will be added including advanced adult care leadership in nursing family nursing mental health concepts and clinical labs Cartwright said Emery County health care quality may be jeopardized due to a shortage of registered nurses if the approval docs not go through soon Cartwright believes 1- -5 |
