Show Coach sets her team goals high on Lady Eagle softball program set for spring by Timi Blsquera staff writer College of Eastern Utah's women softball program was an "if" this year until Brenda Yancey decided to pull a competitive team together raise the needed funding and win some games for the Eagles She will be the head women's softball coach and is donating her time and talent to put together the 1988 Golden Eagle softball team Because unlike other coaches Yancey is not getting paid for all the time and effort that die has been putting into the softball program She's doing it simply because she loves the sport Coach Yancey has been playing softball ever since she was in tenth grade and coached a JV team (16-1- 8 year olds) in California which is much like PTOvo City's Bobby Sox Last year she was the assistant to Don Bennett CEUs head coach Yancey and her husband Frank did not move to Price until March 1986 and thus she took over tire assistant coaching job for the lady Eagles Her coaching philosophy centers around an excellent conditioning program "Conditioning is the key to having a good team Having been a former I know competitive power-liftwhat it takes to set one's goals and become stronger" she said According to coach Yancey when she got here last year and saw the girls she didn't think that they were doing very well "Most of the girls lacked ambition But this year will be different" she added She said that this year's goal is to not be as strict as she's been with her other teams in the past She feels that they're not ready for that yet She would like the team to have a better season record than last year's and hopefully take region and then go to the nationals She feels the girls that are er coming out for the team this year have the strength and determination to leant and become stronger athletes They even show up for 6 ajn practices she said and that is very important because the girls really want to come out play and do their best Practice officially started the second week of February Yancey conducted a two week out from February 8-- 19 Non-mandato- tryry tryouts started practicing right before the December break The eariy-bir- d tourney which opens CEU’s season will be the Dixie tournament in Sl George Utah on Mach 17-1- 9 Coach Yancey said that this should be the ice breaker for the team We need to play in a Coach Brenda Yancey tournament to find out how competitive CEU will be and to find out the right combination of hard to raise some money They've had cash drawings during the men's basketball games candy sales donations and other well apparticipations that are very preciated die added No matter what Yancey said if the team has to hitchhike all the way to SL George they will because she really wants to bring back a trophy for the BDAC So far Yancey has bought equipment with the money that they have raised but getting complete uniforms will also be a big problem among other things Since it wasn't really decided if the program will continue this year until recently most of last year's uniforms were lost or stolen Therefore the team will not have complete uniforms when they go out onto the field unless there will be a stronger community support in assisting the Eagles raise additional funds She also feels her program doesn't just need the support of the community but also the students and especially support from CEU Athletic Eagle Page 7 Lady Eagle Basketball Eagles chalk up another victory by Stacee Pene staff writer The CEU women's basketball team was victorious against now " Snow was able to beat NI so you never know what might happen As for Ricks we got beat quite bad the last time we played them because we didn't shoot well If we can shoot like we did in our game
