Show 2—CEU Friday January 21 1983 ©IPDKDCa- - era Jorgensem's eaves positive f3memories Southern California He was the center and nose guard on his in 3 seasons football squad in high school that finished 30-3They were 13-- 0 his senior year and the recognized California champs After two years at UCLA and Golden West JC Jeff enrolled at Utah State There he played tackle a position reserved for 250 pounders Jeff weighed 205 pounds He fought clawed and used emotion to open holes for his winning Aggie team He was a graduate assistant and later an assistant coach for Utah State before coming here He was always associated with a winning football program By Bob Taniguchi & Corey Tuckness -1 CEU faculty members After 3 years at the helm of CEU football fortunes Coach Jeff Jorgensen called it quits Despite the rap of excessive cussing chewing tobacco and having 3 losing seasons he gave CEU and the community something positive He gave us the example of true commitment to his profession He was totally dedicated into putting quality into a football program that was on the critical list If students were as dedicated to academics as the football staff was to football CEU would be graduating many more future doctors engineers and computer scientists Colorful or flamboyant Dedication almost paid dividends Coach Jorgensens dedication almost paid dividends With a few lucky bounces a more solid kicking game and perhaps a break on officiating CEU might have been the ICAC champions Through my participation in the football broadcasts I got to see what was involved in putting together a football team I watched his staff work 70 hours per week trying to capture the magic of a winning team I witnessed slow but steady overall progress that finally Snow culminated in a final game victory over arch-rivCollege the eventual ICAC champions CEU footballers led the conference in total offense and had Probably one of the reasons he was a winner was the way he lived his life full blast He was always on the go If you liked Jeff his loudness was termed colorful or flamboyant If you disliked him those same qualities equated to abrasiveness But he always had time to say hello and become involved You knew where he stood on most issues He was a person you would rarely forget after meeting him In short he was a very distinct personality ready to take on a challenge I am sad to see a man so committed and so full of life get away from our campus GEU could use a few more personalities like Jeff Even though he did not produce a winner he gave us three years of his best players as teams with better records £ We lost some of our games making freshman mistakes but those freshmen would mature and K thoughts of “wait till next year" were rampant because He Then suddenly Coach Jorgensen resigned quit he wanted more of a commitment from the school and com- to match his commitment He also felt that three fc years was enough time to put a winning team on the field Zestforlife Everyone who knew Jeff I’m sure felt his zest for life He’s a highly emotional person who ran his football team the same way He once described himself to me as a “junkyard dog" always fighting and scrapping his way through life I think the handle fits Jeff grew up in one of the lesser affluent neighborhoods of Football is a fickle game College football is a fickle game You cannot always measure the worth of a coach by his record Such is the case with Coach Jorgensen Maybe he just wasn’t meant to be a head coach To me the man went out a winner because he stuck to his principles and his conscience He did his best and no one can ask for more The reins of the CEU football team will now be turned over Bob Price Coach Price will run his team differently I personally feel he will be very successful and I can hardly wait until next season when CEU enters the ICAC wars again Meanwhile let’s not forget this year’s team It was something to be proud of and Coach Jorgensen can hold his head high The Jorgensen era has ended at CEU but not the memory of the man no matter what you perceive him to be al as many CEU’s record was 2-- 7 Forensics settle for second The College of Eastern Utah’s forensics team had to be satisfied with a second-plac- e finish behind a large and Dixie squad weekend at a last College college speech tournament hosted by the Eagles Dixie College went home with eleven trophies CEU won nine Ricks College and Snow College earned seven each strong from College of Southern Idaho took Editor Photography Editor Advertising Manager Sports Writers Keporiers Northwest Community College from Wyoming had two trophies and Casper d College went home five empty-hande- although they did have some students competing in the finals Team winners were Claire Maxwell and Nannette Tur-casin debate They were faced with a new debate so which resolution was (Continued on Page 4 Lona Colby -
