Show Friday October 29 2-- CEU 1982 Book review Double exposure Double exposure By Kristan Smith of the Eagle Staff Superstitions have been around as long as man has been civilized They are expressed in every day activities though they’re not as important as they once were they are always referred to in hopes of gaining luck or avoiding trouble There are literally hundreds of thousands of superstitions but do people really know why they say and do them? For example my grandmother used to say “mind your p’s and q ’s” but I think if she had known the origin of this she might have refrained from saying it In former times ale houses used to chalk up a record of how much a person drank on a wall or a board P for pints phrase By Lona Colby of the Eagle Staff DOUBLE EXPOSURE and Q for quarts A careful drinker would be sure that the bartender was accurate in his tally so as not to be overcharged thus minding his p’s and q’s Superstitions or phrases are instilled in us all through our childhood and carried along with us in our everyday life without giving them a penny too’’ or "If the New Year comes and all your drawers aren’t clean you’ll have a bad year” superstitions came religious beliefs or coincidences For instance the phrase "Knock on wood” comes from the belief that since Christ was crucified on a wooden cross and since all over the world pieces of the Many from cross somehow appear touching the wood would bring sustained happiness Another example of religious origin is surprisingly the superstition that walking under a ladder is bad luck This seems a logical deduction at first sight because something might fall on you But the reason it is considered bad luck because a ladder was used in the crudfiction of Christ and has since been considered evil So this Halloween if you feel brave open your umbrella in the house or throw your hat on the bed Take a chance Maybe you’ll find that lightning won’t strike you down by Blaine and Brenton Yorgason Bookcraft $995 hardback The plot basically is this: The
