Show 2— CEU— Friday Oct 21 1977 OPINION Up to dote on ASCEU Activities HjO Shortage DEBBIE FIVECOAT JIM BUNNELL ASCEU President One of theclassic causes of apathy in student government is the lack of information available to the studentbody A student who knows his officers and what they’re doing is much more likely to get involved in student government And that characterizes my goal in writing this column: to let you know what your student government is ac- complishing and failing to accomplish At the outset let me stress that all opinions offered here are my own and don't necessarily reflect the opinions of the ASCEU Executive Council and its officers Often I will outline what is being done in the ASCEU offices as ob- jectively as possible leaving you to decide if we’re doing our jobs right To bring you up to date the ASCEU Executive Council met for the first time September 2 to discuss intital plans for Fall Quarter Each officer had already received a copy Non Mormon student of my report on the Mormon on based which was my observations of the problem solutions contained and possible problem Of those solutions several were adopted by the Executive Council including the reaffirmation of the Associated Students of the College of Eastern Utah an organization I believe has taken a back seat in student government for the past few years even though its members are the entire CEU student body The initials ASCEU became the trademark of the studentbody much as the University of Utah's studentbody affirms itself with the initials ASUU The move was more or less a public relations tactic aimed at unifying the CEU studentbody under one all- encompassing lable The Executive Council also voted to limit representation of the LDS Institute's organizations to one representative on the ASCEU Activites Board In previous years the Institute groups had as many as four representatives on the Board causing an obvious imbalance in interests on the body Since the September 2 meeting the Executive Council has also adopted a set of regulations dealing with the publicity activities which are open to the of student entire studentbody In publicizing such activities the sponsoring organization must now include ASCEU in its posters indicating to the student that the activity is not limited to any particular group on campus One final note in this area: as a member of the College’s Administrative Council I brought up a question at the Council's October 4 meeting which was prompted by concern from an alarming number of students I asked the Council if it was ethical for the LDS Institute to hold its registration in the hall across from the cafeteria where the College’s general registration was being conducted I was told that in years past it has been traditional for CEU to invite many types of groups to set up registration or booths in the main building during general registration For the good of the studentbody as a whole however I believe that whereas the Institute is close enough to the College to be easily reached by students wishing to take Insitute classes it might be better for such registration to be conducted there No final decision was reached during the Administrative Council meeting but I was assured that the matter would be taken care of during club-sponsor- at CEU? Eagle Editor The lack of water around Carbon County has become a the CEU Institutional Council meeting September 29 the Council members by and large approved of a small major concern for everyone since last spring By saying increase in tuition fearing that no increase might result in a everyone this applies to most people except the College of large jump in tuition the following year Since I must report Eastern Utah to Commissioner Bell on the CEU studentbody’s attitude Since school has started (and probably before that also) towards a tuition increase I would appreciate hearing your the College feels it is necessary to water not only the grass but the sidewalks as well This in turn also waters the concerns on the matter Also at the Institutional Council meeting Dean Walton people who need to use the sidewalks in order to get to class e enrollment I don’t think it would matter so much if it was a "once in reported a 131 percent increase in over Fall Quarter 1976 But not all the increase news is awhile” occurance but it has become an almost "daily” good Last year the girls staying at Aaron Jones Hall were occurance on Campus cramped into the dorm at 106 percent occupancy obviously This does not mean the College should stop watering the beyond the Hall's capacity But this year with four girls to plants and grass but we should be more conscious of the each room the figure has skyrocketed to 168 percent oc- - present water situation and conserve as much as possible cupancy At the same time occupancy at the East Dorm On many days after running through sprinklers which are has risen to only 87 percent Needless to say plans are being spraying the sidewalks I have noticed big middles of water readied for the building of a new dorm facility during the wasted This is water that is conserved by others and next couple of years which are of little comfort to AJ's wasted at CEU This year water is a very scarce and valuable resource present residents our awareness of this fact be made after there is no Should before bow final football will its the take proposal Finally the Board of Regents at the Board's next meeting The water left? I think we all should save on our water usage Institutional Council voted unanimously to support the and not waste or use it unnecessarily and the College should be a leader in the water conservation crusade College's continuing fight for intercollegiate football But lest you find me hypocritical for voting with the How much longer do we the studentbody faculty and staff Council on this matter I must point out the woriing of the motion carried unanimously Dr OW Phelps who made have to wait before something is done with all the broken the motion moved that the Council support the proposal "to glass in the main parking lot? We realize that the grounds and maintainence crew is fruition or impasse” Since I have long been opposed to the idea of reinstating football and can see little chance of the busy but glass is dangerous and should therefore be put proposal being approved by the Regents "impasse” seems high on the priority list to be taken care of to me to be the only result Therefore since so much time has been spent on the proposal I couldn't see the point of If anyone is interested in voting against the motion when it had been worded so( working on the yearbook has staff or any satisfactorily contact If you have anything you want ASCEU to know please suggestions please feel free to come up to our offices any time during class tynthia Grange or Gary Wixom in room 215D hours At full-tim- Homecoming Week November 712 ed DdqGddqdS third place sweepstakes honors at their first tour-informati- on nament of the year CEU joined colleges and universities from four states at the Madcap Forensics Tournament held at Mesa College in Grand Junction Colorado last weekend Brigham Young the next several meetings University won first place On October 21 1 will meet with other members of the Utah Palomar College from Council of Studentbody Presidents in Salt Lake City to California was second discuss tuition for the coming year with Dr TH Bell place and College of Commissioner of Higher Education Eastern Utah placed third in total team points Kevin Black from Boise Idaho was CEU's big winner He won the first place trophy in Informative Speaking and repeated as the top performer in After-Dinner Speaking Roslyn Montoya from Helper was a finalist in Entertainment Speaking and Valarie Bruno from Helper just missed the Infinals in Oral terpretation of Literature Others making the trip representing CEU and making a respectable showing in their first college speech competition included: Norma Alger from East Carbon Landmon Daniel from Cuba Donald McCandless IIiMitlngton from John Daskalos from Price and Tom Orl from Helper f TJCaece flCae GeDeGfloera Gflp3 never |
