When? “Gibby by Joyce Lipsey who?” was the history of the “rock" is response received from people when this reporter began searching for historical information on the background of the CEU Rock Gibby Everyone seemed aware of the fact that we had a new attraction in the front of the Main Building as a result of this year’s Eagle Week they also knew that it had been moved out of the trophy window in the Main Building and placed in the cement outside Yet no one was sure of the reason why this honorable shapeless “blob of a rock” was in the trophy window to begin many with After receiving no sub- stantial information from the students the search was then turned toward some of this institution's faculty members The following are some of their reactions: “When I was a student here in about 1952 1 don't believe there was such a thing at least I don't remember hearing about it But I do know that it must be the most painted rock in the world!” This report puzzled me so off to the I went After searching through pages of articles selected for the school's history I found the following information The article was dated September 26 1940: “The chief activity of the week will be the second annual fight between the Sophomores and the Freshmen for the right to paint their numbers and colors on the rock in front of the school" Curious I continued to look in the following week's paper the Freshmen won the fight which was big across a mud puddle and thus won the honor of painting the rock This another posed question: If it was started in 1939 what happened to Sun-Advoca- tug-of-w- te ar it in 1952? So far no answer From another professor came - ????" “Sory but the vague however I am certain that Gibby is short for Gibraltar but other than that you may have to consult the college yearbooks” This was a good hint— off to the Library I to find that joumeyed-on- ly the Library helper didn't know where the yearbooks were or even if the Library had any Fine! At least I was getting somewhere The next interviewee answered with “I’m not really sure of the particulars but I do believe that the rock before being inside was placed locatedin the middle of the sidewalk as one entered the front doors of the Main Building When the annual fight of painting the rock took place paint would be splashed all over the sidewalk the students would then walk in it and carry it into the building on their shoes— creating a mess on the floors From another source I was told that the rock was only “carrying size" when it was first brought into being by the early CEU students Thus another Could it question: really have that much paint on it? From business a prominent man of the community as well as a former student of the College of Eastern Utah I found that the rock was moved into the main building some time ago because of the treatment it was receiving— it was getting broken up and the purpose of it was being misused After trying to pinpoint all the “facts and figures” of CEU’s “Gibby” I must admit FAILURE— no one seems to know!! But from the information I gathered here’s the probable history : In 1939 the students in an effort to raise school spirit decided to have a series of competitive events between classes the winner Miss CEU will compete in Miss Utah Pageant Outstanding athletes gain honors Winning top awards at the recent annual Athletic Banquet Wendy Atwood and Nate Phillips were named the Outstanding Athletes of the year The announcement was made after other awards had been given in all categories of athletic activities Nate Phillips was also named the most outstanding basketball player Also in basketball Alan Scholtec was given the academic award and Greg Morrill the inspirational award In baseball Frank Marrelli was honored as the most outstanding player Two trophies were given in track and field with Scott Morley receiving one for high point and Jeff Lott the most inaward Craig spirational Smith was awarded the trophy in cross country Julio Feliciano captured the award in wrestling The outstanding award in tennis went to Steven getting Henderson athletics In women’s Wendy Atwood was also honored for her outstanding performance in softball Kerstin Tucker was given the trophy for most outstanding in volleyball and Mary Lou Marstella in basketball Jill Spencer was named the most valuable swimmer Linda Nelson was given the title Ideal Blue Deb The trophy for gymnastics was awarded posthumously to Connie Anderson and was accepted fay her father Cartel An- The annual Miss Utah Scholarship Pageant activities will be held this year on June 10 11 and 12 at School Orem High the College of Representing Utah at Eastern the Jan Jan qualified for the state will be competition Johnson of Price Miss Utah Tickets for the Saturday evening pageant at the School Orem High auditorium will be available at the door Those planning to attend are advised to be there early to get choice seats Jan Johnson Have a happy summer!
