| Show THE Page Two EAGLE GOLDEN Friday May On Campus One of the most difficut tasks of the college instructor is to inspiire in his students an attitude of ss Students fresh from high school where attendance seems m ! the primary consideration and academic performance a poor second find themselves unable to adjust to college life where the situation is just the reverse Too often the result is that students during their first quarter or school year perform poorly and sometimes fail Fortunately these students often continue to attend school anil apply themselves with new determination Sometimes determination is not enough for these students have not acquired the necessary skills to become successful Consequently they trudge along constancy between a C or D average hoping that something on the border-lin- e will pull them through Such students live a tragic life for they aren't getting their money's worth because they are unprepared to take advantage of the education offered them Something can be done about this situation Such students can be successful if they have the courage to admit to themselves that they lack the elementary skills of reading writing speaking spelling and mathematics I know of several successful teachers and instructors who have faced this situation and crisis They have had the courage to admit their deficiencies and have enrolled in remedial math English vocabulary building and spelling courses and have gone on to become successful students teachers and scholars Being a successful student is almost a prerequisite to becoming a successful engineer mechanic salesman or teacher Do not be fooled by those who might suggest that activities like intramurals and of dances recommendation than are higher sports not social and activities are are imgood scholarship They Sports in life and have but their college place portant they are no substitute for high academic achievement So if you are contemplating a junior or senior year at the University of Utah or if you plan to become a doctor lawyer or engineer first become a good student by learning and applying the necessary skills Work hard do that extra assignment and discard that get-b- y attitude Become academic-minde- d extra-curricul- — ar Mr Hofeling Poetry Forum Ballad of the One-Ey- When lights arc low and evenin’s near The eyes of every man Are turned toward that mystic place We know as TV land With reverent awe they turn the knobs And tune the color bar Adjust the sound recheck the dials And take away the glare A hint of rolling vertically Will turn their gaze askance But barring this calamity They settle in their trance From Walter Cronkitc with the news To evening's Perry Mason Their gaze is still the same one used In viewing Face the Nation They've seen the Western cowboy Toss his canteen away The Missions that they see each week Appear Impossible And yet they know Jim Phelps will prove The enemy a fool When summer comes a sad lament Arises In the frame They’re furred to view the same old shows 1969 A New Look Guest Editorial academic-mindcdne- 2 ed Monster Of winter once again Their biggest joy in life becomes A prophecy of plot And many wars in happy homes O'er endings have been fought The recognition of a star Of some old series past Will cause a tremble in the heart A tear a windy gasp And when at last the Late Late Show Has made its nightly stand And patriotic hymns are played " band By some The viewer solemn as a king Yet speared with rays of dread Salutes the box his nightly friend And calmly goes to bed Everyone on campus has undoubtedly noticed the activity taking place around the campus grounds The landscaping department is in full swing with its program to beautify and improve our campus CEU is soon to look like the architects imagined it when they planned the new campus improvements and facilities One of the major projects is in making our campus look green again In the area immediately Inland Hofeling 0 Astronaut (Continued from Page One) Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) with the Command Module These two crafts have the ability of joining together in such ways as to form 4 or 5 distinct and different space vehicles The mission lasted 10 days most of the tests being finished in the first five When asked why man is needed in the space program as the un- manned space craft seems to be able to do what needs to be done the astronaut replied that man will always be needed to meet the unknown The unmanned vehicle can gather the information ns long as we know what to expect But man still remains our only source for meeting recording and reacting to the unknown But the reason could be that man has it in his nature to meet the frontier himself— not a machine At the banquet he presented a film of the flight of Apollo nine Throughout the film the dele- -
