Show THE GOLDEN EAGLE Page Two Friday March 14 1969 Letters to the Editor Save Your Vision In the old navy tradition we extend a hearty "Welcome Aboard!" to the new editor of the Golden Eagle Tom Hoidaway Unfortunately Tom also in tradition with your new job ": les the old problems Probably you have already given thought to these problems and many have put your plans into effect However we fed that the following may be helpful to you in future planning They are certainly areas that are of great concern to many of us here at College of Eastern Utah Primarily we feel that the job of this newspaper any newspaper is first to be an accessible tool through which diversified opinions may be heard and secondly to provide to its readers lively relevant jounmalism Since the second job is the easier of the two let’s discuss it first To partially achieve this end we offer the following suggestion followed by a specific example: 1) Use of pictures to show some obvious problems on campus example— the mud situation 2) Publication of all relevant news dissenting or not example— the incident involving one of the male cheerleaders of the college who was refused the trip to St George 2) Human interest stories about students of CEU example-forei- gn students and Vietnam veterans 4) An "inside line" to new staff and administrative policies example— the recent discussion on the possibility of setting up a test file in the library The next problem cannot be solved by so simple a means as a few suggestions and examples The problem is that of using the Golden Eagle as a "sounding-board- " of opinions and problems that should come under consideration To fulfill our part in this endeavor for a better CEU we will submit for publication one or two such opinions and problems per issue At this time "we” would like to identify ourselves as a growing group of interested students unofficially known as ISOC (Interested Students On Campus) Of course the solution to these problems rests not with you or with us but with the entire student body and administration Our aim is to encourage the harmonious solution to our problems and we welcoce support or dissent with our views Next issue we will discuss a problem that has great importance at this time of year to every student of CEU— the resale of used bodes From The Editor Students at College of Eastern Utah should be aware of the benefits of good vision in our lives Dr Jack Parry Price optometrist said “The significance we give to vision and our dependence on it for so many aspects of living cannot be overemphasized" The Price Doctor of Optometry continued “Nevertheless surveys indicate that two out of three adults and 56 million children throughout the nation are handicapped by inefficient vision" This week commemorates the annual observance of Save Your Vision Week by proclamation of the President of the United States in answer to request made by joint resolution of Congress The theme "Life Is Worth Seeing — Your Vision is Worth 42nd Care" should have special sig- nificance to the faculty adminis tration and student body at CEU Research indicates that 80 of all information acquired by an individual is gained through the sense of vision according to the American tion Optometric Associa- Danger signals which may indicate a professional eye examination is needed might be any of the following: Excessive blinking frowning or rubbing of eyes material Holding unusually close School achievement less than general intelligence level Avoidance of reading or tasks requiring visual concentration Nausea or dizziness after visual concentration Unusually short attention span Unusual posture— poor general coordination—awkwardness Slow or inaccurate responses Selicdnle for IFinials The schedule the winter for quarter finals: 10:00-12:0- Monday March 8:00-10:0- am 0 — 17 daily Gasses held daily MWF— 1st period 10:00-12:0noon — Gasses held daily MWF— Oth period 1:00-3:0pm — Gasses held 0 0 daily MWF—7th period Tuesday March 8:00-10:0- am 0 daily MWF—4th period — 1:00-3:0- daily 0 noon — Classes held MWF—8th period pm — Gasses held 3rd period Wednesday March MWF— 19 am — Gasses held MWF—2nd period daily 10:00-12:0noon— Those classes 8:00-10:0- 0 0 that haven’t been mentioned 18 Gasses held GOOD LUCK! Dear STUDEN1BODY: The newspaper staff recently received a letter with the signatures students Included at the end We want to thank the of twenty-onstudents for having an interest enough in the newspaper to use it and confidence enough in us knowing we would support their request The reason it is not appearing in this edition is that we really did not know the intentions of the students in regard to what they wanted us to do with the letter We would like to make the following suggestions for students to follow when submitting a letter for print in the newspaper: 1 Is it a letter to the editor— or who should we address the letter to? 2 Is it for immediate release or are you requiring a grace period before printing? 3 Do you intend for the signatures to be included in the foot of the news release or do you wish for your names to be left anonymous? Some additional guidelines for students interested in writing a letter to the editor include the following: n 1 Letters with correct punctuation and must be included spelling 2 Letters should not exceed 100 words This will allow more students to be able to write to the editor in each edition 3 Make certain that your request complaint or recommendation is explicit enough that the editor can understand your message and respond accordingly We appreciate having the opportunity of having a newspaper on this campus The newspaper is the Voice of the studentbody with a consideration of making sure that the information is of interest to the entire studentbody We encourage you submitting information to us The Magic is You e type-writte- One of the things you can and need to do if you want to exert a positive influence on your own future is decide on your goals and standards You can do it ahead of time and be prepared for situations as they arise or you can be lazy about planning and making a spur of the moment decision In choosing standards for yourself you are all influenced by people you admire but it’s more helpful for you to aim at cultivating the qualities you find admirable in others than to try to be just like someone "else You need also to realize that your development must be along two parallel lines: the development of your own special talents and individual characteristics and the development of your capacity to understand and get along well with and be liked by others (human relationships) There is an old saying "HITCH YOUR WAGON TO A STAR" This means in setting any goal set it high for if you constantly look up you are more likely to climb up Let your dreams for yourself be as high and as bright as a star for you have the capacity to be the person n) THE GOLDEN EAGLE Advisor AMS AWS Reporters Reporters Photographer Typist L Brent West Hoidaway Randy Johnson Rick Mason Douglas Barker Pat Johnson Steven Johnson Steve Johnson Richard Maughan Vivian Farlaino Kara Gardner Linda Smith Jill Esklund Kathy De Simone Richard Maughan Gay Nordfelt aiaaaiiaaaiaaiaitaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiaaaaaaaaaiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiaaaaaa Editor Assistant Editor — Sports Editor Business Manager Advertising Managers Thomas J |
