Show ' ihc College ol Eastern Utah High School Speech Meet are rror: row Sell to right: Mantle Sorensen Gunnison Holly Walker :t Francis Susan Pcpes St Francis Debbie Shields Highland Linda Grounds Highland Danielle Welsh Notre Dame and Vickie Randle BountHuL Back row Paulette Hrst place wlwrs In Ilyer Provo Jerri Weeks Provo Dan Pixley St Francis Gary Silver Wasatch Stove Paschal Kearns Brett Huish Orem and John Spatafore Notre Dame Class A Debate winners Dean Taylor and David Eckerlcy of Hillcrcst and Mike Black bum and Brett Richards of Ogden were not present when the awards were given A SPECIAL EDITION Volume VII March 4 1968 NUMBER IS COLLEGE OF EASTERN UTAH PRICE UTAH Highland Heads A’s Wasatch B’s Both Duplicate Last Year’s Effort A champions Highland High’s forensic squad Class Perennial powers Highland and Wasatch looking like the New York Yankees of the speech meet circuit captured the sweepstakes trophies for the second consecutive year in the ninth annual College of Eastern Utah High School Speech Meet Held January 27 this year’s CEU high school speech meet was the largest ever hosting over 1200 students The 1200 participant turnout marks the CEU meet as the largest high school meet in the state and probably the largest speech meet in the nation First staged in I960 the CEU speech meet has grown almost as fast as the national debt with n net increase of 1100 since its inception Comprising this year’s field were speech hopefuls from 45 high schools A real community project the meet Involved the use of all the campus facilities plus the facilities of four schools and five church buildings in the immediate vicinity The communiity also helped in supplying many of the 300 judges that were needed To help judges do the best job possible a “school for judges" was held just prior to the tournament scinbly Getting underway at 8:00 a the meet began with registration in the lobby of the Geary Theatre Preliminary rounds began at 9:15 climaxed by the finals which were started at 3:15 in the afternoon After completing their final rounds the contenders were either biting their nails off up to the elbow or trying to exercise away their tensions at a dance held just prior to the awards assembly After what seemed an Interminable wait the individual winners were named and the trophies given to sweepstakes champions Highland and Wasatch Along with a stunning piece of hardware to put in his trophy case each first place winner received a full tuition scholarship to the College of Eastern Utah at the Awards As-- ect the sweepstakes winners Points toward the sweepstakes crown were based on the individual performances of each team member by averaging the scoreshcet ratings for the preliminaries each participant was given a mark of superior excellent good or fair A person earning a superior excellent or a good rating contributed 5 3 or 1 points respectively to his team m One of the themes during the past few years of the CEU meet has been participation This is refected in the scoring system which was used to selth-er- ne Giving the philosophy behind the scoring system Nell Warren head of CEU’s forensics department and nsslsu it director of the meet explained “We believe in participation by many Wo don’t like the ’star system If one is truly concerned about forensics and drama feeing educational activities he should en-- v Continued v on page two) i : |
