adventurous college students from a gully near Wood Hill According to Dr Aaron Jones past president of Carbon College the purpose of the rock was to give life to Carbon College to have something over which the freshmen and sophomore classes could battle Lynn Goctsman named the rock “Gibby” which is short for the Rock of Glbralter At first “Gibby" wai obtained to mimic the rode which the University of Utah and Boulder Campus so valiantly vied for possession brating her 23rd birthday Friday December 11 1964 — Carbon vs Dowell Wyoming 8:00 Armory Saturday December 12 1964 — Christmas Dance Gym 9:00 pm activity cards 16 17 II December 1964 — Final Exams 18 19 December 1964 — Carbon vs Rangley THE MESSIAH" The eleventh annual perform- ance of George Frederick Handel's immortal oratorio “The Messiah" will be presented Sunday December 13 at 2 pm in the Carbon High School Auditorium Th public is cordially invited to attend There win be no admission charge Soon after the arrival of "Gibby” she received her first coat of paint and from that day forward students have been slopping all colors and kinds of paint on her "Gibby" has stood more than her share of rough treatment and disgrace Not long after her arrival to the campus a group of unidentified persons picked the rock up and hauled it to the Price River where it was cremoniously dumped overboard After an extensive search the rock was located and with the help of a wrecker was restored to Its original place In front of the college Talk has It that at one time the discussion arose that “Gibby" should be thrown away and replaced by a chunk of coal During “Gibby's" first few years at the college the president and officers decided that the situation caused by "Gibby" was getting out of hand It was decided that from the beginning of the Autumn Quarter until a few days before Homecoming that students would be allowed to battle over the rock so long as they kept the paint within boundaries and left no obscene phrases on the stone At the end of this period the student government assumed the task of decorating the rock with the proper school colors and a block "C" painted on the front of It Dr Jones stated “To‘ me it was a source of pride and satisfaction after It had been properly dressed after the skirmishes were over It was really a thing of beauty when It was properly cared for and kept clean and bright: but I must admit that each year X gavp many sighs of relief when the time for antagonism was over and "Gfcby" had on its best clothes for the rest of the year" Christmas time as commemorated in song and word throughout the Christian religions of the world is the theme for the annual Carbon College Christmas program to be presented Tuesday evening at 8:00 pm in the Geary - Admission will be by activity card Decorations will be provided by various clubs and organizations who will compete in a Christmas tree decorating contest All trees will be decorated during the day Saturday with the final results viewed by ail at the dance The organization doing the best Job will have their name inscribed on a now trophy purchased this year Dancing will be to the music of Gene Vca and the Golden Notes A now idea in refreshments will also be carried out according to Tim Alexander student body president During intermission the winner of the tree contest and the winner of tft"Clrele K raffle will be announced Also featured will be ' a special Christmas holiday farewell by the student body Theatre Setting the mood and tone of the program the narrator in his introduction says: “Though Christmas Is portrayed with diversity from country to country the samp feelings Joys and expectations o the Christmas season remain constant in the hearts of all peoples” Participating will be the College Choir directed by Frank Postma a brass ensemble and choir soloists Nancy Robertson and Kuu Reid Miss Inga Johnson soprano w!l: be guest soloist She will sing two special selections and join with the choir in other numbers Highlighting the impressive pro gram will be such selections as "I Wonder As X Wander” “As Lately We Watched" “Ding Dong Merrily On High" “Carol of the Birds" “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” “The Snow Lay on the Ground" "Angels to the Shepherds Say" and A particularly stirring part of the program will feature Miss Johnson and the College Choir performing a portion of Johannes Brahms majestic “German Requiem" Narration will be by Tom Long-hur"Pat-A-Pa- n" st No admission will be charged according to college officials Choir officers Steve Di am anti and Paula Butler review some of the music that will be sung during program next Tuesday |
