Show ) Pag Four Wednesday May 9 1962 CARBON COLLEGE GOLDEN EAGLE The Sports Casters Regis to Become Carbon High Coach by CLAUDE and ORLANDO Carbon College Goden Eagles launched the 1962 baseball wars with a double setback at the hands of the Mesa Mavericks The Mesa teams banded Carbon a 15--5 defeat in the opener and a 0 setback in the nightcap Both ball games were played at the Mavericks home grounds in Grand Junction Colorado ' The BYU varsity baseballers clashed head-o- n with the Eagles at Provo as the Cougars handed the Eagles 18-- 1 and 20-- 0 thrashings These games were closer than the score may Indicate as key errors led to big innings for the Cougars and they put both games out of reach — C C — saw 7 Mesa team travel to Helper to meet the Saturday April the Eagles in a twin bill In the first game the Eagles led 2 at the end of five thanks to a two-ru- n homer by Frank Compagni Carbon catcher However the lead was short lived as Mesa scored 10 runs in the final two frames to defeat Carbon 12-- 3 In the night cap Bob Fratto engaged in a tight pitching duel with two Mesa hurlers The Mavericks scored the only runs of the contest as they blanked the Eagles 0 Fratto limited Mesa to just four hits but Carbon could manage only a single by Dick Robb off the offerings of Mesa's pitchers — C C — The Carbon College baseball team opened ICAC conference play by traveling to Cedar City and St George to play College of Southern Utah Thunderblrds and Dixie Rebels respectively The first double-headat Cedar City saw superb pitching combined with poor Carbon fielding saw CSU sweep a twinbill by the scores of 18--1 and 1 Poor fielding broke up tight ball games in both instances The following day the Eagles were hosted by Dixies Rebels Good Eagle pitching and a tight defense led Carbon to a sweep of the doubleheader by the tunc of 1 and 2 This doublcheader sweep enabled the Eagles to even their conference record at 2 — C C — Carbon College's baseball team by sweeping six straight games is currently tide for the top spot with CSU Both teams have 2 records in conference play and ixth have defeated each other in doubleheaders Carbon is currently on an eight game winning streak and has only a doublehcader against Snow College at Ephraim remaining on the conference schedule April 20 saw Carbon host Snow in an afternoon doublohoador John Candelaria and Richard Regis pitched Carbon to 4 and 10-- 0 victories over the Badgers The following Thursday Carbon hosted Dixie Collog?
