Show Pag THE Four tiiiHHiiHHiinmiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiMHimiiwiuimHHHiiiMiwiinmiiMiniWBHHMiiHUHHiinHWiiiiiimiiiwiwiiimiiHiUHMWMiinmiMHuiiiwmniiiiiiiHi JDM'S JOTS JIM PAPPAS With the last of the liowl games over football has ceased for this school year and basketball is loginning to take over completely all over the nation One might say that it has taken over at Car-Ixthat is there is a basketball squad for the high school and one for the college But like football it has not taken over the fans if there ever were any It is very humiliating to go to a game and find the players outnumlcr the people in the stands Basket bail is very easily controlled or aided by the fans They sit very close to the floor and can very easily make their presence felt At the last few Carbon games however the only thing noticed about the crowd is their absence If the people missed only one game or even two and supported all the rest then the teams would feel that there is something to strive for It's all a vicious cycle The fans say they wouldn’t go to see teams that don’t play spectacular ball and the teams will never play spectacular ball without the steady support of the fans If the entire studentbody resolved to go to the first three league games of both the high school and college this column is sure that the Carbon area would be seeing basketball at its best m Throughout the year in this column attention has been called to the idols of the sports world Pete Dawkins George Yardley and others have been mentioned One more will now be added to the list — that of Rafer Johnston sportsman of the year Rafer Johnston is a d fine example of the intelligent and popular athlete He has served this year as student-bod- y presidnt of UCLA lie has spoken at thousands of drives charities and dinners to spread the popularity of sports in general and of the Olympics in particular It was he who gained the spectacular decathlon victory over the Russians lie has broken the racial barriers and will always be remembered in the athletic circles of the world Few who knew him in high school will forget al)out the coach who had such a weak line that he put ten men on the well-poise- line every time and used Johnston as the only backfield man Another demi-go- d of sports has arisen It’s been quite awhile since an athlete has been singled out for praise It's difficult to single one person out but something should be said about the work of Byron Patterson of this year’s basketball squad Every team seems to have a short member who always catches the eyes of the sport scribes Thus it is with Byron Basketball despite what is said to the contrary is a game for tall men This is why it is so difficult for a little man to find his place Byron has however found or rather made his place on the varsity squad There is no question that Byron is the general or quarterback of the basketball squad It is his quick hands that set up a majority of the plays Here's to Carbon's “Little General" in Willie the Waterboy says: 'Tve been sitting in this gym for three weeks When does girl’s basketball begin?"
