Now maybe you’d like to hear about my school I love it! In the first place they were indeed very liberal with my credits I was given credit for all their required lower division credits plus a little n different as it could be — much broader — though I think in some ways our (meaning Carbon) system is more intense Actually if I took a full load (which would be only four classes) I could finish my BA in five more quarters maybe less So that is very good I am taking three classes: Mathematics ABC ( an elementary math class since I didn’t do so well on a placement test and also since I had never had any college math) a course in Chinese Gvilization (which is one of the best courses I have ever taken) and introductory Political Science Math is the only lower division class I had to take Political Science is taught by Herman Finer I don't know if you have heard of him but evidently he Is quite well known At any rate he wrote the textbook we are using which is very interesting I really enjoy my classes very much There is only one thing I regret and that is that T cannot start again as a freshman and get the full benefit of the wonderful four-yeprogram that this University has True the student has little choice of subjects but you couldn't ask for a broader liberal arts background than you would have after four years here Don't mistake me I wouldn’t trade my years at Carbon for anything not even two corresponding ones here but if only I had the time and money to start again and take their whole program I certainly would do so You might tell Reba Stanford and Terry that if they should happen to get their scholarships they couldn’t go wrong at Chicago (After two years at Carls 180-- nk Santa Claus Plays Cupid er the Maulcs Visit Carbon Halls Hala-manda- IIENRIE great-grandfath- Students Come Home Mr and Mrs William E Coleman of Helper annouce the engagement of their daughter Janice Lee to William Edward Warren of Price son of Verna Warren Majors and the late William Delmont Warren Miss Coleman is a senior at Carbon High School and the prospective bridegroom is employed in Price Mr and Mrs Robert Buchanan of Helper announce the engage mont of their daughter Bonnie Jo to Vernon G Cook son of Mr and Mrs Lorenzo Cook of Price VaLynn Dennison Price and Eddie Simms Price JoAnn Shu-maand Arland Michan both from East Carbon and Sandra Hansen Spring Glen and Theron Thompson Price have also told engagement news Former Carbonite Attends Chicago U The House Of the Seven Gables was one of Nathaniel Hawthorne's first popular novels Hawthorne apparently conceived the plot from his own family's history The setting was the home of his cousin Susanna Ogcrsall His Justice Hawthorne had presided at witchcraft trials The Justice and his family were cursed by a woman he had sentenced to the gallows The Justice also injured a neighbor who refused to forget and forgive until the two families intermarried From this Hawthorne history came the idea of the story of the Pychoons and Miss Charlene Anderson daugh- newly-electe- Rags Thraa Literary Journeys SOCIETY and CLUB NOTES Job’s Daughters Meet Officers Installed CARBONICLE upper-divisio- ar Art Teacher Named Mrs Ann Moffat is teaching the art classes at Carbon High School and Carbon College Mrs Moffat resides in Dragcrton with her husband Alex D Moffat who is minister of the Episcopalian churches in Carbon county Before coming to Utah last August Mrs Moffat lived in Connecticut She studied the history of art at Vas-s- ar University in Poughpcepsie New York and received her BA Degree Mrs Moffat continued her study in Europe where she visited the following places: Louvre in Paris Ufizi in Florence Italy British Museum and National Gallery in London Giartres where the world’s most beautiful stained glass windows are in France St Peter's cathedral in Rome and Sistine Chapel Frescoes by Michel Angelo in Italy Although a world traveler Mrs Moffat is intrigued by Utah and made this statement: “I am overwhelmed by the scenery in Utah" admission office at $135 an hour if you don’t mind my getting mercenary in telling you wages It is mostly (in fact all) typing of envelopes etc but i enjoy it quite a bit I am working about 20 hours a week which is plenty with all the studying I am expected to do I have had to read about 400 pages in these first two weeks for just one class! So I am kept busy and tonight I became involved in debate That is just like opium with me I can't quit But we have scheduled with the Big Ten colleges so they should be interesting And my speech record at Carbon certainly didn't do me any do-bat- es harm This campus is simply lovely — old Gothic architecture lawns and ivy The most beautiful building on campus is the Rockefeller Chapel Every day it seems to hava a new mood and they are all no lovely The people are very nic and very very intelligent and outstanding and the food's good and the beds nre soft and my hours are wonderful (two three o'clock privileges every month never have to be in before midnight) — ao I have nothing to complain of Well I had better quit enumerating the wonders of the University of Chicago and start studying for some of its classes Say a good word to the Eagl-ettfor me bless the AWS me to the campus and think of me sometimes es re-mem-ber of course) There are so very many interesting things to do here other bon than classes They always have some sort of lecture series here Next Monday Ixo Strauss is starting a series on the foundings of Political Science I went to my first Socialist Meeting (I can just hear the react km that should bring) at which Michael Harrington talked I must say I am very impressed One funny thing about this campus (the undergraduate part at least) Democrats are considered conservative The politics start at liberal Democrats and range left But it is very interesting The Chicago Symphony Orchestra starts their season this Friday with Beethoven's Ninth I hope I can go there sometime also I have a very nice job in the SMART School Clothes At HARRIS STYLE Broadbents SHOP Fine Foods East Main PRICE Price UTAH Price Steam Laundry Complete Laundry Service for Every Need Complete Linen Supply- - Rentals - Dry Cleaning Towels - Cabinets ALL TYPES OF SERVICE “Home of Authorized Sales & Service" |
