Show IU1 Ini Campaigning in Vogue During Election Week Volume 23 CARBON COLLEGE PRICE UTAH FRIDAY MAY 10 1957 Number 15 Election week got off to a good start Thursday morning April 25 when a nomination assembly was held during the regular assembly hour Paul Carr school president officiated with Irene Rosclla serving as secretary Students nominated were President Ron Shaw Harry Halmandaris Willie Miera Jim Bertelsen Cliff Woodruff and Jim Bean Harry Halamandaris Dickk Judd Jim Bertelsen Jerry Ramsay Carl Morley Phil Faucett Fred Regis Terry Alger Pat Bendall Ron Shaw and Dave Pizzuto secretary Lorretta Abeyta Sandra Nielson Charlene Anderson Diane Bean and Joan Pitts Elimination balloting was held Friday the finalists being President Harry Halamandaris and Ron Shaw Carl Morley and Terry Alger secretary Loretta Abeyta and Diane Bean The Gold and Blue parties were organized Thursday evening with Harry Carl and Loretta comprising the Blue ticket Bruce Broad-bewas selected as campaign The Gold Party was manager made up of Ron Terry and Diane with Gerald Cook serving as chairman of campaigning for the Gold vice-preside- nt vice-preside- nt nt party SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES Winning candidates for the three top student body offices at school year are Carbon College for the 1957-5- 8 shown following their election last Friday Left is Carl Morley vice president Diane Bean secretary and Harry Halamandaris president The Injuries Prove Prominent Carbon Educator Awarded State “Oscar" Fatal to Prospective Grad Archie Blackham sophomore night student attending Carbon College was killed on April 25 In tiie American Fuel Mine in Huntington Canyon when the roof of the mine caved in on him and two fellow employees Zen Jensen and Joe Piccalo Archie expected to be graduated from Carbon this month so his name will appear on the graduation list on May 29 He was working his last shift in the mine at the time of the accident He was married to the former Viola Arnold and was the father of two small children Funeral services were held April 29 in the Huntington IDS Second ward Burial' was in Huntington cemetery Carbon Band Gets ‘One’ Contest Rate The Carbon band Journeyed to Orem Wednesday May 1 for the Spring music festival Five other bands participated in the contest Spanish They included Orem Fork Payson Springville and provo Each band played three selections at least one being a contest number Carbon’s three numbers were Manhattan Beach March Cantille and the contest number "Ballet Music from William Tell" The bands were judged by Ralph Lay cock director of music at the A-da- BYU president and vice president were candidates on the Blue ticket while the secretary was supported by the Gold ticket The election was held following a torrid campaign and the results Indicated that the students picked personalities rather than following party lines Mrs S W Marshall prominent Questioned about her teaching educator was selected as winner activities at Carbon College since of Utah's "Oscars for Teachers" 1955 Mrs Marshall said "I guess award which was presented by the I just couldn't stay from Utah State Federation of Women's Clubs during its annual convention last Friday night Mrs Marshall will now compete with representatives from other states for national honors as the person who represents the finest traits of the teaching profession She has been teaching since 1919 and has been active in civic and club activities It is her belief that one should try to find the heart and capabilities of the individual student and work from there She explains "I am Just a country girl so I understood the rural people better and I believe a teacher should know the student and parents personally in order to teach him to the best of his ability This is the reason she has remained in the smaller colleges Utah’s 'Top Teacher" spent her first 10 years teaching in high schools in Utah Wyoming and Arizona She was for a time the only teacher in Ferron High School and while there she inaugurated the school hot lunch program "It was all volunteer work and merchants donated items as did farmers who could My home economics girls did the work and the school elementary grades kept the bodes as an arithmetic pro Monday morning saw both the Blue and Gold parties launching an extensive campaign program Numerous signs were displayed in the halls of the Main Building and in various places on the campus Especially noted was the large display on the backboard near the vocational building which advertised the Gold party The painting of “Gibby” was also noticeably in evidence Tuesday mornBoth parties passed hand ing painted napkins candy and balloons to the student body during the noon hours Highlight of Tuesday's events was a bathing beauty contest and dance held from 12:00 to 12:30 Participants in this contest were Verla Magann and "Pcewee” Piaz Chuck Christensen and FaNon Da- -
