Overweight cause such diseases as heart disease high blood pressure and in many cases a tendency towards diabetes Overweight is definitely a problem which can be controlled and its bad effects nullified the speakers all averred “Seventy-fiv- e per cent of diabetics are overweight to begin with" stated Dr Gale Anderson One should never gain weight after he is 30 years of age To gain twenty pounds after one becomes 30 years of age means that his life expectancy is decreased by 26 per increase means a cent a 56 per cent decrease in life expectancy the audience learned This was the third meeting of a series of health forums which is being sponsored by the Carbon County Medical Association Carbon County Extension Service of the Utah State Agricultural College Carbon College Carbon 50-pou- P-T- A nw" :mwv r ROSIE RACHELS RON SHAW Rosie Rachele and Ron Shaw were the winners from Carbon high in the “Independence For The Handicapped Through Employment" essay contest held in most of the schools in Utah Rosie was named first place winner and Ron was second Judges were Mrs Bess Jones Mr Wesley Larsen and Miss Lucille Ilulme The students that entered this contest were confronted with a great many stiff rules Originality in their compositions meant the difference between winning and loosing The grammar punctuation and spelling were a very important item in winning too The winning essays have now been entered in the state competition Carbon to Represent Band Plans Concert “Austria" at Mock To United Nations Session The Carbon high school band under the direction of Mr Alvin Wardlc has had a busy time this year helping the Carbon Band Parents to secure money for the new uniforms Uniforms will be ordered this coming week and all those who would like to Join the band are urged to enroll for the spring quarter The Carbon Band Parents have been very diligent in campaigning for funds ‘for this large project and will close this campaign for the band uniforms with the final concert of the season which will be held April 20 This concert will be given in the City Hall The admission will be small and it is desired that the students get behind the band and help them to raise the remainder of the money that Is needd On March 31 the New Century club will sponsor a program from the BYU and the proceeds will be given to the band March 17 the Carbon County Sheriffs Posse will sponsor a dance the proceeds from which will be given to the band The new uniforms will arrive in time for the band to don them for the two festivals April 27 and May 4 The Carbon Band parents would like to thank all organizations at school and all the students for their cooperation in helping them to complete the project Carbon high school has received an invitation from the University of Utah to represent Austria at a mock session of the United Nations to be held at the University April 20 and 21 Five Carbon high students will be chosen lii the near future to sit in at the session Mr has been noted that observers will be welcomed to sit in at the session but will not be permitted to speak First Aid Instruction Proves Popular Class Mr Vernon Merrill has proved to be a very interesting teacher throughout the years One of his most popular classes is the physiology class which he teaches to seniors at Carbon high During the winter quarter he has instructed this class in first aid Although the class was a lot of fun and proved to be very interesting the tests which were given at the end of the quarter were difficult These tests Included group problems on splinting bandaging and individual oral tests Half of the students engaged in these classes are proudly sporting their newly- acquired first aid cards The other half who were not quite so Well as Mr Merrill
