Show 0 Friday May 6 1955 TIIE GARBONICLE Pace Four J Nile Washburn (Continued from Page One) father was principal of the LDS Seminary for years Mr Washburn’s mother was honored for her exemplary life by being chosen Utah "Mother of the Year” three years ago Mr Washburn was graduated from Brigham Young University with a batchclor of arts degree in 1929 and a master’s degree in 1933 He has taught at several high schools Byron high school in 8 Virgin Wyoming from Valley high school in Nevada 1928-3- 0 he served as principal of 1 chi high school from 19&) until at which time he went to work with the Geneva Steel Company in Provo To his friends Mr Washburn is especially known for his humanitarian qualities he is especially interested in helping anyone desirous of cooperating to reduce any sort of prejudice In that connection he served with the Ameruntil ican Bed Cross from 1913 serving in England France and Germany After having served two years for the Bed Cross Mr Washburn came in 1913 to Carbon College in his present capacity There was an interim of one year when Mr Washburn began doing graduate work for a doctorate at the University of Southern California He returned to Carbon in 1948 Mr Washburn spends his time writing He has collaborated with his father in writing two books on the Book of Mormon The first From Babel to Cumorah is a general discussion of the Book of Mormon the second Book of Mormon Geography presented for the first time in print an entirely new concept on the Book of Mormon This latter book quite revolutionized thinking on the subject Mr Washburn's most recent book Content Stivefure and Author ship of the Book of Mormon has just this year been published From his wide background and study in this field Mr Washburn is always in wide demand for lectures on the Book of Mormon wherever he is Friends who know him well regard Mr Washburn as the best informed man on the Book of Mormon who is living today According to Mr George C Morgan "In that respect he is touched with 1927-192- 19-1- 19-1- -- genius” Mr Washburn has done an exceptional task in coaching students in oratory and debate The years that Mr Washburn was adviser for the Carbon chapter of the national fraternity Phi Bho Pi Carbon At Carbon College College was the only really small school to do anything at the na- tional speech meets One year Carbon garnered a fourth place in the nation for total points and an-- 1 other year a third place Four years ago in a national meet of Phi Bho Pi Mr Wash-bumteams placed first in men’s oratory first in men's declamation first in women’s oratory and third in women’s oratory These teams were participating against teams from colleges such as Los Angeles City College with 18000 enrollment Pasadena City College Compton College all some of the best speech schools in the nation In the field of journalism Mr Washburn’s students have always ranked first at the annual Brigham Young University journalism contests Three years ago Carbon walked off with two first places two seconds and five honorable mentions This year he coached Beverly Ganser to a first place In addition to his work on the Book of Mormon Mr Washburn is the author of several unpublishHe has written ed manuscripts several novels one based on the conquest of Mexico entitled for which he is seeking a publisher Mr Washburn plans on vacationing in Old Mexico this summer doing research for his novel He has signed a contract to teach at American Fork high school Mr Washburn’s family is on their way to doing some equally great things Van Washburn was student body president at Carbon About the Campus By Verla and Carollyn Have you noticed that Bob Ilais-li- p goes about singing "Buby you're like a dream"?
