Show Page Four THE CARBONICLE STORES VARY AS NIMRODS RETURN BOOK REVIEW By Harold Wahl KINGSBLOOD Friday October 3 1947 FROM THREE-D-AY TRIP IN HILLS ROYAL Whatever might be your personal opinions regarding the present problem of Negro versus White you will absorb much food for thought while reading Kingsblood Royal In this his latest book Sinclair Lewis exposes the naked elements of this highly controversial subject from the standpoint of the Negro as seen through the eyes of a white man who is suddenly forced to accept the fact that he is a descendant of a black man Neil Kingsblood a young veteran of World War II has returned to his home town married and has a job in the town bank He is urged by his father to make a study of the family history in an effort to determine whether or not the Kingsbloods are direct descendants of British royalty During the study Neil becomes curious about his mother’s side of the family Upon investigating this branch he discovers that his mother is 116 Negro His reactions first of shock and shame then of acceptance and finally of pride in his race make enlightening entertaining and full-blood- ed reading If you arc white (or think you are) and have the average white attitude toward the darker race you arc bound to regard each black man you meet in a more thoughtful frame of mind than has been your custom If you a black you will rejoice that at last you are portrayed in a fine piece of literature as what you really are just people For the Best in FOUNTAIN SERVICE “tPhe girl who puts her SOUL INTO PHOTOGRAPHV & AST minute loue just MAKES THE DEADLINE HELEN NIELSON WRITES MEMORIES WINS CARBONICLE ESSAY AWARD By Helm Nielson The school building stood in I readiness for the day ahead walked across the lawn and stopped to draw a deep breath of the frosty autumn air Such a day! As I walked up to the door of the school building I felt I was not alone Nor was I The minute I stepped into the hall I was engulfed in memories Pushing crowding they edged their way into my mind There was the radiator where "the gang" met every noon which you took your lifejn your hands every time you went by for each of us was an individual menace with his or her madly whirling key chain I crossed the hall There was a new showcase with a plaque across the back of it Names gold star names filled the columns and more than a few were familiar I was struck with the enormity of their sacrifice There they were and here was I wondering if I was doing anything worthwhile with the freedom they had left me I shivered and the chill seemed to break the trance Turning I moved down the empty halls and there echoed with dew-sprinkl- ed Each week The Carbonicle will publish the best essays by high school or college students Teachers are asked to submit essays to The Carbonicle office The winning essay will receive a check Miss Helen Nielson Is the first winner of the Carbonicle two-doll- ar award voices of students long gone "Cheer for old Carbon Carbon will win" "Got your chem?" "Where’s my locker key?" Past classrooms where I had looked with longing out of the windows waiting for the day when I would tackle and conquer the'world past the cafeteria where I had stood in so many endless lines past the solarium where we had fed indelible pencils to the white rats I wondered Thus I turned my footsteps toward the door Part of me remained behind I have no doubt That is the only way I can account for the sharp pain inside me as the door closed By Maxine Vukslnlck Here it is again the time of year when the golden leaves fly a little faster and the wind blows a little stronger This i s deer season time when the mighty Carbon College deer hunters pick up their trusty guns and take off for the wild country Last Friday the halls seemed a trifle quieter and less populated It was no secret they were deer hunting Monday morning all of this had changed as I walked along the halls I could hear in loud tones "You should see the deer I got" and in lower tones "Well I know ” he’s small but Well anyway they were excused from school and we assume that they all had a wonderful time But it was lonesome for a while What about the rest of the hunters? Are they still wandering in the hills or have they given up? It has been predicted that they will remain where they are until they get a deer or until deer season ends CARBONETTES Selecting Darlene Carlson as their candidate for Homecoming Queen the Carbonettes began their preparations for the annual fete During the past week several Carbonettes have been selling candy on the campus the proceeds of this sale will go to the student lounge fund GREEHHALGH PHARMACY American Veterans enrolled in schools and the G I Bill must comply with the regularly prescribed standards and practices of the educational institutions the Veterans Administration cautioned today tuition does Government-pai- d not place a veteran in a special privilege class VA said Students must abide by all rules and regulations and must academic maintain satisfactory Wilful misconduct or unmarks satisfactory progress are grounds for withdrawal of subsistence and tuition payments In the past most student veterans have attained academic marks equal to or students above the and wilful misconduct has been negligible VA reported colleges under non-veter- an KIDS! 111 I vah Just thinking hour iwrll I I'hed to Irrat you guys IHd I tell you that I have the beat 'burgers and frairh fries in store for you and that I have everything that will suit ya just walling for ya to rome and eat 'em so come on in and sit in our nire comfy booths We're open all the time so hurry down I'll be wailing for yas "Zaekf HEAP '() CREAM SANDWICH SHOP Print Utah Always the Best Values in Carbon County NAVE WITH SAFETY AT YOUR REXALL STORE HELPER DRUG COMPANY HELTER UTAH PHONE 97 F ANSELMO & CO MEATS IF s V A SAYS NOT TO CODDLE VETS GROCERIES VEGETABLES Prompt and Courteous Service i Utah Helper Helper Utah For Better Service and Longer Wear Be Sure To Have Your Car Serviced at the "The Mostest Groceries for ALPINE SERVICE the Leastest Money?9 WENT END OF HELPER JOE GIIIRAKDELLI Manager Main Street Columbia Utah |
