Show SPLENDID STAKE conference the quarterly conference of the box bos elder ader stake which was held in the tabernacle in this city on saturday and sunday last was waa truly a time of spiritual refreshing and may honestly A be characterized as one ot of the best conferences ever held in this stake slake the visiting leaders of the church were elders hyrum it smith and stephen L richards of the quorum of the twelve apostles and at all the meetings the stake presidency high council and bishops and counselors ot of the various wards of the stake together with many of the heads of the various presiding quorums were in attendance at the saturday morning meeting which was a special counsel tor for the various presiding priesthood of the stake the best representation characterized the meeting ot of any similar gathering ever held in the past every bishop but one who was lawfully excused was present in many cases the complete bishopric including the ward clerk was present all the alie high councilmen who were not out of the city were in attendance and all the priesthood quorums qu except one were represented I 1 A brief report of the condition of the stake was made by president S norman an lee which indicated that improvement pro is being made in some departments part ments of the work patriarch edwin P cordon reported the activities of the patriarchs and invited the bishops to encourage the people to got get their blessings elder richards of the quorum of the apostles made some splendid on the duties of the priesthood officers and class leaders ile he laid particular stress upon the presiding authority in the quorums where tile the young men are taken rare care of and Ins insisted sted that the very best men in the wards should be b calag dl idao ir direct hla vork awn who are what he termed boys men individuals who can feel and sympathize with the boys and play with them ile he pointed out that the priesthood work is the foundation of the entire structure and this department must constantly have the care of the presiding s if the priesthood work nork is thoroughly looked after and encouraged there v will ill be less civil marriages and the parents to beir bear in inlaid their responsibility in impressing upon their children the sacredness of the marriage covenant and all the other commandments of the lord in order that when the children grow up to a discretionary age they may be able to clearly discern the path ot of right when they must walk alone at the saturday afternoon sess sessi loa all tile the stake priesthood stake and ward Ofil cers were in attendance at af ter attending to some matters of bustness business president alice M johnson of the stake primary board gave a report of her organization showing everything ery thing to be in a very satisfactory condition president victor E madsen madsea expressed himself briefly and then hider alder hyrum M smith addressed the workers on the sacred responsibility of making covenants ile he illustrated his point by referring to the business ot of the meeting in which five young men were accepted and recommended for ordination to the priesthood each of whom signified his willingness to accept the responsibilities which such ordination entails and promised to live the gospel as aa nearly as he be can elder smith declared that the covenants thus made were nere not made alone before tho the people assembled but were made before god and no man can ruthlessly go out from the congregation of the saints and break covenants thus made without being made to suffer the displeasure of the father tor for god will not be mocked elder richards who Is chairman of the church committee on social work outlined the purposes of that activity which are in a word to promote a better feeling socially among the lat ter day saints and to bring the parents and children together more often in social intercourse the most vital parrot the work wark is to correct the evils that have crept into social gatherings such as the public dance and other forms of amusement and establish a standard which will bo be high in its moral effect as well as capable of at providing the very finest kind of entertainment lie he urged those who have been appointed to direct this department part ment of the work in the various wards of the stake to give it their most earnest attention and support on oil sunday morning adults attended the meeting tho the sunday school children were conspicuous by their absence and while some little trap idison may have been felt for the attendance of the grownups grown ups at this session it was proven to be groundless by the splendid audience which abich gathered in the tabernacle the tabernacle choir was present and the meeting opened by the choir and congregation singing the hymn I 1 now naw let Us rejoice after which elder lewis S pond offered the invocation tile the choir then sang the hymn come coma dearest lord and president joseph N stohl stahl was the first erst speaker ile he expressed himself hims olf as feeling very happy in the work and spoke of his earnest desire to do some good baca day stake superintendent hervin hun derson dersch of the sunday school reported that organization as getting along splendidly except in the matter 0 of the normal training class all the wards are not conducting this class and he made an earnest appeal to the parents to lend their support to the movement elder able S rich stake chairman of the social committee reported ted that his committee is now in working order and ready to begin activity the organization has only recently been completed stake superintendent jos F hansen of the religion classes reported that organization as making splendid progress sarah P stohl stahl of the relief society gave a comprehensive report of the summer activities of that organization miss amber Ilam sorn sang a solo entitled tho the stranger star from the cantata tata star of the east and elder richards was the next speaker lie ile referred to the great catastrophe at it halifax and tile the difficulty the relief relict committee is experiencing in brining bring ng succor to the afflicted people the first thing that had to be done was to organize the committee and in this the speaker drew a comparison with tile the splendid organization of the relief society and how that organization had it been in the vicinity ol of this world horror could have gone right ahead with etli the work of bringing and comfort to those afflicted without any time being lost in getting organized the relief relict society is one of the greatest organizations in operation anywhere all mankind needs the helpful influence of the gospel and the organizations izat ions of the church tor far it and they are ordained and established tor for the t purpose of blessing gods godf children the speaker pointed out the value of children and the responsibility of parenthood ile he read a beautiful poem entitled what A baby costs and said that parents make a mistake in turning their children over completely to the government of the auxiliary organ izat ions of the church and they also make a mistake in not seeking the assistance si of every organization in the church in rearing their children in this great world only one individual out of every one hundred thousand holds the priesthood which is the leaven that ilL effect the entire world patriarch denmark jensen reported that during the summer the patriarchs of the stake have visited every ward in the stake except the corinno corinne ward and talked to the people on the subject ot of getting their patriarch ial bless blesa ingo inga the tha patriarchs meet once every three months and report to each other their activities the closing song was the hymn high on the mountain tops by the choir and congregation and bishop david P burt pronounced the benediction eleven hundred and twenty six souls were in attendance at the afternoon meeting and it was necessary to open the vestry in order to accommodate the crowd the musical program rendered by tile the choir consisted of solos and choruses from the cantata star of the east the solos being sung by connie M peters amber hamson Ha inson stewart vance and preston watkins tho the opening prayer was by patriarch wm horsley and elder hyrum NI smith was the first speaker lie he delivered a profound discourse on tile the character of young people and tile the responsibility ot of parents in teaching leaching their clil children laren and the responsibility of children in listen listening ng to the counsels of their parents ile he pointed out the inclination cli nation of young people to be restive under the restraint of parents and teachers and then declared that eliat the most deadly sins of 0 the world is rebellion which is ie really treason young men and women should appreciate the fact act that the gospel has been given tor for their salvation and and it must needs be that government shall be exercised tor for without government there Is anarchy aji archy our young people must be taught more spirituality and trained in tile the principle ot of obedience in order that they may receive the blessings which they are entitled to and prepare themselves to assume the responsibilities ot of carrying on this work when those who are now directing the work have become worn out in the service elder richards was the elie concluding speaker and he carried out the theme of the former speaker ile he referred briefly to the part the chucci las taken in demonstrating its patriotism during the past summer in enlisting soldiers subscribing to the first liberty loan subscribing to the red cross fund and then to the second li berty loan and then to the soldiers and sailors welfare fund and he declared that this splendid record had attracted the attention of the nation the wonderful organization of the church had also been demonstrated to the nation in these various activities for it has been almost n holly through the organizations of the church that these various subscriptions have been handled and as a result of that efficient organization utah was in the very verv lead in promptly meeting the requirements of the government the strength of a nation is in its citizenship and the strength of the citizenship is found in the homes of the people there Is no better place to exhibit patriotism to tie the I 1 nation or to the kingdom of god than in the home tor for that is the real breeding place of good goad citizenship cheger the general ent ands and local authorities were presented by elder IV C horsley II and unanimously sustained in the evening the M 1 I A presented a program consisting of a chorus entitled devotion by the choir choir a baritone solo by stewart vance a violin solo by W N trenchard with prof E D mann at the piano a girls chorus under the direction of 0 11 sirs preston budge a sola aola by jessie whit aker and a discourse on the american Abor aborigines gInes by elder eider IV E morgan E ider elder A M hansen directed this part of tile the meeting and elder richards delivered a splendid address on tile fie value or of good reading in the life of a boy and gul girl lie ile first bore his testimony to the divinity divin ty of the book of mormon and declared that all the evi deuces dences presented by nider elder morgan pointed to the tact fact that the record as contained in the book of mormon of the first inhabitants of this continent is true the speaker declared that home building is the most noble of all professions and lie he urged the young people to get the habit of staying at home and reading good books rather than goring going to moving pictures ninety per cent of which are built upon the theme of domestic infelicity to the public dancis dances and other places of amusement where pleasure is offered for sale rather than tor for tile the moral uplift of those who ho are patrons lie ile declared that the young oung people of gf today need the guiding of the spirit ot of god cod and the gospel spirit ten times more than their parents did because of ane many evils which beset their pathway lie ile counseled modera tion in christmas giving this year and urged that the giving be largely centered upon those who can be helped by such consideration rather than to lavish so many gifts upon ones own ow n family president S norman lee expressed a beautiful benediction upon the conference in telling the people ot of the hopes and ambitions of those in authority relative to the influence and effect ot of the spirit ot of the conference upon the people generally ile he blessed the people and urged them to return to their
