Salt Lake County Attorney Neal Gunnarson submitted to justify the secrecy surrounding his probe of the mayor's gift receipts "The court has seen no good cause given that this information be released' Wilkinson said "(Releasing) it would have a chilling effect on witnesses testifying in a grand jury or investiga- tion In March Gunnarson said the laws were too nebulous for charges to be filed in the mayor's acceptance of $211000 in cash and stock gifts from friends many of whom have business with the city He did not explain his findings citing the secrecy order he sought before he started his investigation Since then Tribune attorneys have been trying to get Gunnarson to release at least the documents he was required to file to have the case closed The Utah Subpoena Powers Act requires prosecutors to file a "good cause" statement and apply for an order sealing an investigation A Utah Supreme Court ruling required those documents remain port of the public record but legislators then changed the law to allow judges to seal closure documents So none of those documents is available in Gunnanon's review of Conadini's gifts After his office spent 1300 hours and between $43000 and $60000 to review the mayor's gifts Gunnarson also rebuffed the City Council's attempts to acquire information about the investigation Rhode Island Ethics Commission Director Martin Healey is retracing Gunnarson's steps He is expected to complete his investigation next month and all of his findings will be public A fireworks display lights-u- p the sky above the new Sunset Station Hotel Casino during Its grand opening celebration in Tuesday night Fire marshal: Tents at Sundance legal PROVO (AP) — A couple of canvas and wood frame tents set up at the Sundance resort may not he allowed under the Utah County building ordinance hut the fire marshal says they meet fire code Sundance officials brought in the tents after the central administration huildingburncd in the summer of 1996 nul auipty pffi-cia- ls have prohibited their use over the past six months Because Utah County's ordinance docs not spell out use of a membrane structure planners for the county have insisted the tents are not permitted But Utah County Cbmmission- - er Gary Herbert said he has talked with Utah County Fire Marshal Tom Wroe who believes the tents meet the fire code and can he used as a temporary structure intended to replace a burned building Wroe verified that the buildings do mcct lhc uniform fire code but said the commission has the final Say as to whether Sundance may occupy the tents "I don't make the policy" Wroe said "I follow it Herbert said one solution would he an ordinance covering "membrane structures" but acknowledged that would lake time A year after six slayings wounds still open amid lingering questions SHOSHONE Idaho (AP) — A year has brought no closure little healing and few answers to the families hurt by Shoshone’s bloodiest crime in decades A year ago today Walter Schoolcraft shot Denise McCoy and her four children — Genevieve II Jordan 10 Chelsea 8 and AdHan-n- a 2 — then shot himself the jury at a coroner’s inquest ruled last September "It's still hard it's too hard to talk about” McCoy's mother Lou Fox of Gooding said Tues- day She and McCoy's stepfather plan to move from Idaho by the end of the month "For me the last year has been living with the dead" said Janet McCoy of Springfield Ore "For the most part our life revolves around death" She and her husband Victor — Denise McCoy's father — said unresolved issues in Idaho slow the healing process Victor McCoy's wrongful-deat- h lawsuit against Schoolcraft's estate has been settled out of court for a "nominal amount" he said But he is still trying to recover some of his daughter's personal effects and be named executor of her estate "I really can't tell you just how much it has hurt us" he said Michael King of Seattle divorced from McCoy in 1993 and the father tit three of the slain children is trying to have children with his current wife A baby would not be a replacement he said but U is a more urgent desire since the deaths The tragedy "does literally split your life into two parts — before and after" King said "You have that there always when you wake up when you go COMES Wkatrar JEANS 13MWZ 936DEN ALL MEN’S 2QX BRAND oi y' over i' Fore Ron Mi A I Vttiu 1" Fran -- I2V ng Enft (20 Sti also discovered the body of John S Jones Modesto Calif deer hunter who was lost in a blizzard in October 1971 The location of Jones' body found east of Thousand Lakes Mountain was i mystery to family members and law enforcement officials for a quarter-centu- en r v si vsjrcri LtS u day C ry 3 Uftd 100 dow adm som S&l r: pun ?
