Show governor wells writes the reporter Re regarding money appropriated for the improvements v of roads in juab counti Coff nty the following letter from governor heber 21 wells to the I 1 bporter explains itself aud will be of interest to our rea ders at th a time STATE OF UTAH I 1 EXECUTIVE OFFICE J salt lake city utah feb 24 1904 MR 0 E HUISH editor the reporter eureka utah DEAR SIR replying to your letter of the instant inviting me to make a statement as to the cause 0 f the delay in making an appointment of a supervisor to expend the amount appropriated by the last leg for the improvement of roads in jenab county I 1 havethe have the honor to say that the appropriation made by the lagis lature in the general appropriation bill of 1903 is contained in thise words lo 10 a person or persons to b be e applin ted by the governor to be appended in the improvement and construction conat luction of highways and bridges inthe in the following counties juab county for roads repairing repairing ep airing roads bea weed eureka and gosh goshen n 1000 00 upon authority of responsible and prominent citizens of both juab and utah counties I 1 learn that therb is only about one mile of the road described lying be tween the county line end and eureka leav ing almost the entire rad which is talon ded to be repaired between said county line and goshen all of which is in utah county the difficulty is obvious there fore the he appropriation is ostensibly tor for improvement of roads in juab county but the roads described to be repaired are in utah county it seems to have been an error of the legislature for this reason I 1 have been urged not to make any appointment until the legisla tuie into meets again and by enactment cor erects the language of the appropriation however I 1 will add that I 1 have not taken legal advice an on the subject an I 1 l my own opinion is therefore reserved deservi d in cornal anee ance with you request you are authorized to state in your paper that the above is the cause of the delay i in n making the appointment v HEBER M WELLS governor |
