Good luck I wish you the best DEAR ANN LANDERS: I'm writing in response to the letter from “Iowa" about prison reform Iowa said a shocking number of people both innocent and guilty are in jail because they had uncaring incompetent attorneys who would lose the case if it went to trial I am a attorney and was offended by those comments I have worked as a Legal Aid lawyer for the last seven years I graduated at the top of my class at law school and am a member of Phi Beta Kappa My office is filled with graduates from top law schools across the country including Harvard and New York University Most of us were offered a lot of money to work in private practice but we turned those offers down to protect the rights of those who need the most protecting attorneys are not uncaring We often give clients money for food and car fare We put them into rehabilitation centers and go to their graduation ceremonies We fight hard every day to Keep our clients out of jail We don’t expect thanks but we would like a little respect People like Iowa think you have to spend a lot of money to get a first-ra- te attorney Charging high fees doesn’t mean the lawyer has greater skills or is more competent When an attorney begins work in my office he or she is given months of supervised training I have found that the most dedicated caring attorneys are Why else would we stick around and endure the bashing? — Karen Johnston Nassau County Legal AM Society DEAR KAREN JOHNSTON: You have stated attorneys in your case in support of a most eloquent manner On behalf of all those quintessential professionals for whom you carried the flag today thank you well-know- ANN LANDERS: A while hack I caught having an affair with a man half her age 44 at the time and court-appoint- I FOR BETTER OR WORSE l Mem rr artcawiy RjcrtyTHwa'-'- nrisifm wsrrbs iMs TAkvn to mum crxvrr WHKN aoMeerc BUB DPAU soHowpe rrrttL EmtrATHmyi T 827 THS WDftK! DEAR READER: This relatively common affliction of unknown cause is marked by severe muscle and joint pains often with fatigue The inflammation which is the source of the pain may be due to an autoimmune reaction during which the body becomes allergic to its own tissues Polymyalgia may also attack the temporal artery (at the temple) called “temporal arteritis” this serious condition causes headache and may affect vision even cause blindness Laboratory tests are normal in polymyalgia — except for one glaring exception the hallmark of the disease: an elevated sedimentation rate When a sample of blood is placed in a tube and left for an hour the red blood cells tend to sink Ordinarily they should not fall more than 10 millimeters from the top of the tube Because the red cells are coated with protein in polymyalgia they settle faster Therefore such patients usually have sed rates of SO millimeters or more An elevated sedimentation rate is not universal in polymyalgia The treatment for polymyalgia — prednisone or other steroids — is so dramatic that this phenomenon is considered by many experts to be as diagnostic as the sedimentation rate With a day or two — even hours — after therapy is begun patients experience astonishing improvement The treatment is continued for several weeks then the dose is gradually stopped If symptoms return the process is repeated Polymyalgiatemporal arteritis usually strikes in middle age and beyond The disorder can be diagnosed and treated by the family physician DEAR DR GOTT What do you know about a new product called Aphthasol for canker sores? DEAR READER: I haven’t had a chance to prescribe it yet Marketed as a paste that is applied to canker sores Aphthasol is the only prescription treatment specifically approved for this purpose In trial involving more than 1300 patients the product accelerated healing relieved pain and was safe Whether it turns out to be a cure for canker sores remains to be seen as the Aphthasol becomes widely used Horoscope judgment might not be up to par so seek the advice of associates VIRGO (Aug 22) Humility is a mar- By Bernice Bede Osoi Newspaper Enterprise Association 23-Se- pt For Wednesday April 16 1997 velous virtue but don’t belittle yourself today in an unbecoming manner It is best to let a portion of your pride shine through LIBRA (Sept 23-O-ct 23) Ifcke care not to overstep your bounds today You may be too assertive Your birthday Several fascinating relationships may develop for you in the year ahead which will lead to a better way of when dealing with the wrong people under the wrong circumstances at the wrong time life and involvement in SCORPIO (Oct matters you feared to tackle previously ARIES (March 21-Ap- ril 23-D- ec seem like everyone is ganging on staunch allies Chances are the even up you problem is the product of your imagination TAURUS (April 20) Acknowledge the accomplishments of others today but don’t let anyone upstage you or attempt to take credit for your inconclusive information Avoid deciding until you are certain you have the real facts n CAPRICORN (Dec 19) A favorite loved one may have money problems today and expect you to bail him or her out Take care to keep your own spending in check first b AQUARIUS (Jan 19) In an endeavor in 20-M- ay 22-Ja- achievements GEMINI (May 20) Though you are not a gullible individual and it is hard for others to pull the wool over your eyes today you may want to believe what you hear CANCER (June 21 --July 22) Strive to be today Friends who desire to do you a favor might not be in a position to do so LEO (July 22) Tike extra pains to evaluate situations before rendering a decision Your 21-Ju- ne Tuesday 1 Living-roo- m 26 30 31 32 33 i Thing inlaw Everneena Eye layer Unusual For fear that India's continent 34 Do-ot- 25 musk 11 Hey! 13 Actress Jodie — 14 Drooping 15 Bar fruits 16 Language suffix 17 Table and — 19 Tam the page br) April IS 20 Sharpest 22 Region piece 6 Typer dance 1 WE'RE KEEPING ITT HERE CONSTANTINE CATCH IT' forearmed FRANK AND ERNEST 46 Barbie's beau 49 Pass by 35 Ho or Rickies 38 Tennis-cou- rt 1 Force unit 2 Debtors' notes 3 Chooses dividers ll Miow 54 Longs (for) 55 Spouses 56 Prods DOWN 39 Closest 42 Sun speech 45 Type of drum y Cessation of existence 53 Spots 51 TmPLtNS i ScWXtl i t candidate 4 Exclama-tin- n of triumph 5 For the — (time being) 6 People of action 7 Doctrine 8 - 4 I DON'T THINK 80 MASTER 20-Mar- ch 1997 hers Prsvieus Punte 1 MY1 HELMET?
