Show W t u SE HANNA DEAD after an illness extending over k period of about two months S e al A hanna died at 6 40 p in mon day at the family apartments in arlington hotel washington for las two days the senator had not bee conscious except at intervals death came peacefully however and when the end came all the members of the senator senators s family were in the room ex capt mrs hanna the senators wife and mr and mrs dan hanna mrs hanna had left the room only a few minutes before to seek a moments rest and mr and mrs dan hanna had gone to summon her to the sena tor s bedside word of the senators death went over the hotel like a flash the lobby was crowded and a score of friends were waiting in mr dover s room no attempts were made to restrain grief senators fairbanks scott and kit broke down general dick wept his sorrow at the loss of a friend who had been a brother so it was that conversations were a curious admix ture of whispers and choked sobs spontaneously outbursts of ed tribute were heard on every side men who are acknowledged leaders of political parties kings of finance and commerce and men selected to serve in the highest positions in the nation were among those who expressed the country s immeasurable loss funeral services will be held in the senate chamber wednesday at noon at which the president cabinet con gress public officials and friends will be present for a brief period in the forenoon the body will lie in state in the marble room after the services special trains over the pennsylvania Pennsyl vanla railway will carry the body the family and friends to cleveland where ser vices will be held either at the home homp of the senator or of his son dan han na on friday afternoon senator hanna s full name was mar cus alonzo hanna and he was past 66 years of age he was born sept 24 1837 in new lisbon now lisbon columbiana county ohio his family demov removed ed to cleveland in 1852 senator hanna was educated in the common schools and in the western reserve university at hudson ohio after leaving school he entered the employ of the wholesale grocery house of hanna garretson co of which his father was the senior member and when his father aed in 1892 Sen senator hanna represented the family s inter est in the concern until 1867 when the business was closed up senator hanna then entered the iron and coal business as a member of the firm of I 1 rhodes co the name of the firm being changed in ten years to M A hanna co under which title it still exists senator hanna was as heavily interested in the lake carrying bust ness both in vessels engaged in the trade and in the construction of ves sels he was also interested in mines and was president of the capin min ing company 0 at lake superior ithe the union N bank of cleveland an I 1 the cleveland city railway company at the time of his death 1 ile was a dl di rector of the union pacific railway company in 1885 by appointment ot of president cleveland senator hanna 1 I 4 f sr MARCUS ALONZO HANNA had long been known as a man ot of great wealth mr hanan was active in republican politics as far back as 1884 when he went to the national convention horn from ohio he was also a member of the national conventions of 1888 and 1896 he ile first became a national figure of prominence however in 1896 when he directed mckinley s first campaign and became chairman of the national committee a position he held from 1896 to his death he was regarded as the most sagacious political man ager in his party and has been a power in its councils ever since he as fumed the chairmanship senator hanan went to the senate first in 1897 when he was appointed by governor bushnell of ohio to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of senator john gherman sherman when the latter became secretary of state in january 1898 senator hanna was elected to fill the short term ending the following year and was also elect ed for the succeeding full term ho he was re elected reelected to the senate by a tre majority last month |
