But he told me to call the Cache County Clerk’s Office so Monday morning I called their phone number They didn’t know but gave the I phone number of the Cache County chair He informed me that he had taken the packet to the precinct chairman’s home I went to his home about 10 minutes to 7 o’clock and parked in front of the house next door to wait until someone else came At 5 minutes to 7 the precinct chairman and his wife came out got in their truck and left I then went and knocked on the door to see where the meeting was to be held Even though there were light's on no one had the courtesy to answer the door Now this would make some people mad enough to change parties but I was taught by my father that you did not do that I am a loyal Democrat and proud of it Even though I and others in the precinct are uninformed as to what is going on and who is running for office Elo Dean Herzog Logan stay Stephens enlisted the boys as chauffeurs on his travels because he did not learn to drive a car and never owned one Unfortunately the reader of Quinn’s long article in Dialogue (Winter 1995) may miss his statements on page 127 “Historical evidence cannot demonstrate whether he actually created a private world of sexual intimacy with his If there was unexbeloved pressed erotic desire in the life of Evan boy-chu- it is possible that only Stephens Stephens felt it since all his boy-chueventually married” So Quinn indicates that his speculations are just that which besmirch the reputation of an honorable man Evan was essentially a man and his use of language was not self-educat-ed precise Some words held different meanings than the usual ones for him as evidenced in his letters So his articles in early church and school publications should not be interpreted too literally He yearned for companionship but having lived through three tragic experiences in his earlier life he never espoused marriage and only vicariously admired families such as Samuel Mil-tonwhere children and a devoted wife and husband lived in harmony Evan Stephens' life of service to his church and community must be inter- in the light of his personality and Kcted background without destructive inferences being made from his “warm relationships” with the youths to whom he could talk as a friend and mentor ’s By Joe Ray L Bergman Midvale To the editor: To the editor: As the author of The Children Sang: The Life and Music of Evan Stephens I should like to respond to your recent articles and letters regarding Professor Stephens In the half years I spent in researching the talks writings corretwo-and-o- nc spondence and music of Stephens I found him to be a humble man lonely and sickly in his childhood who viewed life as a Welsh poet and loved his friends and iijfiHnM as a poft will nil and adults mission was loieacn cnm to sing praises to God I found no evidence to indicate that Evan Stephens was anything but a normal heterosexual individual As a young boy who could sing soprano he was embraced by the older members of the Willard choir and enjoyed the attention and challenge and emulated his new heroes Tb quote from Samuel Bailey Milton “His first musics! experience was with the Willard ward choir with Daniel Tovcy as leader Of this experience Professor Stephens says: ‘It was like suddenly finding oneself deeply in love The world became a new creation and rhythm began to manifest itself in everything I walked in rhythmic motion through the field and behind the cows and music was felt everywhere” The major tragedy in Evan Stephens' life was the untimely death of his fiancee “Rhoda” who lived on the Weber River and was a friend of Helen Mar Leonard of North Farmington Utah Leonard was interviewed (1852-1931) shortly before her demise She could not remember the girl’s name but described in detail her meeting Evan Stephens (probably 1881) his infatuation with her friend Rhoda their engagement (proba- bly 1882) Rhoda's death probably about October 1884 and Stephens' subsequent depression and in grief devoting his life only to music as Rhoda asked This convincing account is told in Patch-wor- k: Early Pioneer Indian and Faith Stories by Ruth Promoting Latter-Da-y in the USU Library Johnson (pp40-45- ) Archives Michael Quinn ignores this but also infers that because Stephens added to his meager income by running a boarding house in his big home on State Street his sharing his bed with the young men whom he financed in their education was more than for simple companionship Several female relatives resided at the home
