Lynn Wendel Paradise A heartfelt thanks to ‘Coach Como’ To the editor: I fc was saddened last week to Bedroom Sets start at hear of Larry Comadcna’s retirement as the Logan High basketball coach As a member of Larry’s first Grizzly basketball team I would like to thank “Coach Como" for all that he has meant to Logan High School and to me personally I was lucky enough to be a senior at Logan High when Larry took over the r Includes: Dresser Mirror and Queen Headboard : i y Chest i Nitestand t i ( i As Mike Ingraham program mentioned in his article concerning Larry’s retirement this was during the “dark ages" when no one over 6’3" could be found within the city limits We were by no means the most talented group of basketball players or athletes for that matter that LHS has seen But Larry taught us how to work hard to play together as a team to believe in ourselves and to have fun We struggled through the season finishing fourth or fifth in our region and were somehow lucky enough to qualify for the state tournament Larry convinced us that we could suc- ceed if we wanted it badly enough and we ended up playing for the consolation championship Along the way we upset Ogden High School the champions of our region who had beaten us eas- ily on two occasions during the regular season Some of my best memories from high school are of tournament that post-seasMore important than success on the court however is the influence that Larry has had in our on j Wing Chairs start at Matteresses start at 4 ir A Twin ea pc Swing Rockers start atT“ Carpet Installed with Heavy Pad starting at Sofa and Loveseat Combinations start at $2§995 1 per square yd Or?' t ' Jf it' rfi Reclining Sofas start atl Swivel Rockers starting at La-Z-Bo- - i' V ft y® simmons all nicknames while at Logan High Being given a nickname by Coach Comadena was almost a rite of passage Your nickname became your identify Many of these names have stuck with us as C 7 3 ' 5 Recliners start at La-Z-Bo- y® coach He was a friend and confidant For example Larry gave us LA -Z- BOY’ UNIVERSAL '7 1 5 A LrV : 'i tmmi i i t : r adults “Spock” and “Fuzzy” and Draw” i Lamps start at lives Larry was more than a “Quick M and “Little Honey" are names which we still use when we get together His classroom and his home were always open to us to seek advice counsel friendship or whatever we may have needed at the time He was and still is genuinely concerned with our overall success This relationship survives today 1 still consider Larry to be one of my good friends and enjoy every opportunity I have to spend time with him He also taught us that i r A kr k f success as citizens was more important than any success we I become the fathers husbands and professionals that we are today in part due to the values that Larry helped us develop f’:: may achieve in athletics We have a It:1 while at Logan High I have been involved in high school athletics both as a player and as a coach It has given me a perspective that few can share & ssl It When considering all the roles that a coach must play (teacher motivator disciplinarian and friend just to name a few) I know of none better than Larry Comadena I can only hope that if my children are ever involved in high school athletics there will be a Larry Comadena waiting to -- JA i- fn -- V BJ J £5 5 : r-- 1 $ who I am today than Larry Comadena M XL Change is usually a good thing and maybe it is time for Larry to move on to other challenges and Logan High to move into a new era Regardless Larry is and jWI $ Ur- - always will be Grizzly basketball to me Thank you Larry for the influence you have had in my life You are a very special person to me and to many others John C Worley Logan High Qass of 1983 Providence 11 t i i i riSVMlin:ri: ' m 'jr c&i u--k ? h j K” i- teach and mentor them With the exception of my own parents no one has had more influence on £m ' msm Way i |
