I'm sure some people really DO need their disability checks but I also know there are some proud decent disabled people who work because they want to They arc too proud to go on welfare Arc diabetics and slow learners really unable to work? I have the feeling these people would work if they had to but since the government hands them checks they'd rather sit back and suck up the taxpayers’ money This really bums me up I know my letter sounds harsh but I had to get this off my chest — Roanoke DEAR RO: True some people receiving disability and other welfare entitlements are freeloaders but the vast majority are decent folks who desperately need government assistance If welfare checks were withheld it would be the children who would suffer Welfare in this country is mostly about feeding and housing children As for the who claim to be sick they will always be among us Alcoholism we now know is a disease and back pain can be excruciating and disabling As for diabetes it can lead to blindness nerve disorders and a host of other incapacitating illnesses Please try to be more compassionate where these unfortunate people are concerned and be thankful you are not one of them gold-bricke- DILBERT 1s rTHE ONLY POSSIBLE EXPLANATION 15 TO M AXE US ALL STOOPED i 50 IT'S EASIER ? By Peter H Gott MD Newspaper Enterprise Association DEAR DR GOTT: My husband had a stroke and is in a nursing home He still can't use his right arm or leg nor can he talk Is there medication to help his brain? I use a hand vibrator on his neck and arm but I'd be very pleased if he could talk again DEAR READER: When a stroke occurs part of the brain is deprived of oxygen and dies causing sympioms that depend on the location of the damage Your husband has had a major stroke that affected his speech center as well as one side of his body This is as I'm sure you've been told extremely serious It’s unlikely that he will ever regain the functions that he has lost Nonetheless the prognosis is not necessarily grim By retraining other nerves and brain tissue to compensate Tor the affected portions physical' therapists and speech therapists may be able to treat your husband's weakness and speech difficulties This is a long and arduous process as you can imagine and he may require extended institutionalization while he works hard to recover Here is the bottom line: Your husband’s damage although permanent can be moderated by a lengthy process of rehabilitation Incidentally the vibrator treatment you are giving him will not improve his condition but it may feel good to him — and to you because at least you are doing something Your best hope is to rely on the expert care being rendered by the professional staff in the nursing home DEAR DR GOTT: What can be done to help hardening of the arteries? Medication doesn’t seem to work and I exercise as much as possible by walking DEAR READER: If anyone had an answer to this question he or she could retire to a private island in the Caribbean Arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is an inevitable consequence of the aging process Thie some people — chiefly diabetics — have accelerated arteriosclerosis but all of us will get it sooner or later There is no cure for it and no medicine to slow its inexorable progression Nonetheless people can do much to compensate for it Stop smoking Pay attention to your cholcs-- ( ierol and cat a balanced low-fdiet Keep as physically active as possible Take care of yourself by getting adequate rest moderating alcohol consumption and treating illnesses (such as hypertension) as they arise Also listen to what your body is telling you and gel an annual check-u- p GRIZZWELLS EEK & MEEK at Horoscope source of a gift today your action may anger the donor and cause him or her to regret their gcncrosi-t- y By Bernice Bede Osol Newspaper Enterprise Association For Thursdav Nov 23 l‘WS TAURUS (April 20) You may become involved in some type of game playing today with a close friend You both will try to outmancuver the other for personal advantage GEMINI (May 21 June 20) Your accomplishments will be noticed by others today so it won’t be necessary to toot your own horn Showboating could lessen your popularity CANCER (June 21 July 22) Do not let the negain you tive thinking of associates arouse on could positive thoughts today Focusing provide the necessary insulation g LEO (July 22) A delicate financial arrangement can be altered to your advantage today but wisdom and shrewdness will be required Fire your best shot VIRGO (Aug 22) Do not judge rashly today If you make a decision which causes you discomfort halt everything and complete the tasks to your satisfaction LIBRA (Sept 23) If any rewards are derived from something done in unison with a part20-M- ay Your birthday In the year ahead you might be materially lucky in mysterious ways However you may discover new methods for getting things done -- -- self-doub- SAGITTARIUS (Nov 21) Strive to be as tolerant with family members today as you are with outsiders Your family will always stand by you when the heal is on and the chips are dow n CAPRICORN (Dec 19) This could be a if the time allotted for for socially you pleasant day pleasurable pastimes isn't snatched from your work schedule 19) It will be best to AQUARIUS (Jan 23-D- ec 22-Ja- 2tt-be- 23-Au- n 23-Sc- pt b 23-O- keep information pertaining to your personal finances to yourself today Do not bare your soul to pals w ho arc too talkative PISCES (Feb 20) A bright idea might not gain the support it deserves today because when you convey it to others your presentation may he ner today share the returns equally Verbal 24-No- IR) If you reveal the 21-Ap- ct acknowledgment will not be sufficient v SCORPIO (Oct 22) Today you might than should and hope you'll And a more you spend w av to cover yourself later Do not count on funds that aren't in the hank 20-Mar- too weak ARIES (March ts FRANK AND ERNEST Crossword ACROSS 31 UaaWM IWUay 13 — S attiTf atdwntt) SB Utw mcfl —HmtnO f 46 47 90 Taj Ca iKjte Fwpafc 52 " n "eLIn Fvinpu I L ULiTil MAllS E RLIC O P C) nrerrsr 1 QufSTIOUt P0 S 'CO YOU CALL A nrSOH WHO HATfS TO APmITS H r THE BORN LOSER PJT ES A V STITT rrrm: E Ki'OJKL WH0KN0W5 TKE raw 7 9crRr--w 6 — TBJ£ REASON kWY UE B 10 11 20 EBjrMl Sewd 111 KAJ&7H5 a M tel Strdipteirt Jurwfrw tan 36 S Aral Hi trarar S DW'ften Atn 3D niM !nrwJkn- - 23 — 3 OVtR 21)" I A RLACR3ACX TrtteVf 6 SuHiitawwd e R ttlM PtALtr Tafftawr OMtag est RATI f -- fl UDM trrs ttumTtiis v a d e s J NWA yITe IN PlTTStURGH wriTtf pr tRNie shat 5 Pmm rAtrimoRE 5 p aXTTzy cTTEXa s e R T E YOU 3 4 Cfcfc Puu eiro u ri EWPjr Tj" 3J 2 Oy fp Td eETTT noeSIiB l 14 tatean DCXVN Oi'Miter A K AHSvtfRS 2teo 62 ActvJtfvry— 1 Mr PSYCHOLOGIST nr flO 61 SnfrtenawvW J7 COMIC STRIP Rmh Pm Ann— Mo Pmrtom 3TR' t :PL SB PR UNIt Ongi M 40 42 44 51 i 57 32 31 Catenas A So 37 ItetMW 5 DNHkW 12 Ian 27 nteJ 33 WctCtH HOLIDAY?
