Show THE LATE WILLIAM L ELKINS AND HIS MAUSOLEUM Z X V h L A 4 0 william L elkins the multimillion ire alre traction magnate and financier who died at philadelphia last week was born near wheeling W va 71 years ago and went to philadelphia with his parents at an early age at 20 he engaged in the produce business la in new york and was very successful later he embarked in the oil prodie ing business in venango county pa 0 41 returning to philadelphia he fished several severa refineries and also added to bis his business the riverside oil works near allegheny city in 1875 he formed a partnership with the standard oil Compa company which pur chased his interests five years later 0 in 1879 mr elkins became identified 4 4 4 with the development of the street railway service he formed a part with P A D widener and with him was afterward associated in all his business deals i mr elkins was one of the In corpora tors of the union passenger railway and transfer company of new york in and in 1886 was among the promoters who supplied boston with the trolley system the following year widener elkins and the united gas improvement company which mr elkins helped to organize in 1882 pur chased the chicago gas light and coke company later the widener elkins syndicate secured control ot of the street railway system of chicago pittsburg baltimore and buffalo mr elkins was deeply interested in the development of art and in march 1895 instituted a prize of tor for the most meritorious painting exhibited by an american artist at the pennsyl vania academy of fine arts he erected a mausoleum in laurel I hill cemetery where his remains were placed |
