A courtesan is a kind of second cousin to an odalisque “a prostitute with an upper-clas- s clientele” I am untutored in such matters but I doubt that one pays a courtesan for her civility even classic Southern civility Did the writer mean “courtier”? Beats me Lots of things beat me The Rocky Mountain News carried a review last Oct of a television South- Monogamous? People who are monogamous are mated for life or at least for more than 30 days It's a fair guess that the professor meant homogeneous as in homogenized milk in which fat globules are mated until the milk goes blinky Often it’s difficult even to guess at a writer’s gremlinized meaning I have puzzled for three years over a story in the Tribune about the annual awards ceremony of the Council of Fashion Designers of America It was quite a party: “Dinner was served on the State Theater promenade which was flanked on either side by Robert Isabell’s odalisques of yellow mimosa and a giant boxwood topiary ” Odalisques? I must be missing something here An odalisque is “a female slave or concubine in a harem especially in that of the sul- - movie starring Kenny Rogers as Brady Hawkes a gambler in search of his son Said the critic: “This is formula television at its best — or worst It’s Old West melodrama that has everything but the oleo stage” Oleo stage? A stage made of margarine? Come now! Out of a misspent adolescence I dimly recall an Odeum Theater where vaude papoose Unless she was bundled up with another papoose making two papeese the writer had it wrong The infant probably was strapped to a cradleboard If you’re interested — and you ought to be because this is impor- tt tant — “papoose” comes from the wold for baby That is all I have to say on this subject Gremlins or poltergeists or something Narra-ganse- messed up an item in The Concord (NC) Tribune last month about a meeting of the town’s aldermen At one point “the lively 30 minute session picked up inertia” I like thit Man and boy I must have covered a thousand legislative sessions that not only picked up inertia but also put it down again The aldermen were talking about water rates It would have been lots livelier if they had talked about odalisques and courtesans instead Feeling like an island? You’re not alonei’? I’ve been divorced now nearly a year and being a tends to add emotional stress on an individual who is already direction Fourth there is generally a loss of social contacts It isn’t that Bartell Cardon Is executive director of Bear raver Mental Health Sendees Inc This column is presented as a public service and Is Intended to assist Individuals and families in improving the quality of over-stimulat- ed for bhmbbmbb m single parent is much more difficult than I had thought it would be The most difficult thing about it is that although I have my children I have a devastating sense of alone-ness Being a single parent is not a piece of cake Men and women who are left alone by divorce or death especially following a rela- Bartell Cardon also means the loss of the children a condition which is rarely satisfied by weekend visitations Second there is a loss of division of labor A married couple usually comes to share the responsibilities of provider homemaker and parent The single parent often is surprised to find just how much the tively long marriage normally other individual actually did experience a profound sense of directly and indirectly The death isolation a form of aloneness that or divorce leaves the remaining can only be understood through parent with all three roles and litexperience Although there are many reasons for feeling lonely five stand out as primary examples First the loss of a mate is often the loss of a confidante someone who has been available to share feelings to listen and to respond The single parent more often the mother usually finds herself living in a home of nonadults As wonderful as children may be they seldom offer the mature conversations the experienced advice and the solace of another adult especially the solace of a mate For one of the parents a divorce tle assistance Women more often than men face a dramatic reduction in income without greatly reduced financial responsibilities Men normally find that they face parenting obligations for which they are unprepared For both men and women there is far less time than the increased responsibilities demand Third with so little time to accomplish the roles of both mother and father there is even less time for leisure activities such as reading walking playing or meditating The reduction in opportunities to unwind through relaxation other people are cruel or rejecting the difficulty is that most of the single parent’s friends are couples As a single parent the individual finds they have surprisingly few things in common with these former friends Fifth the emphasis which society places upon the home especially the intact home often leaves single parents feeling aberrant critical thoughts regarding being “different” Often to be a single parent is tantamount to being alone and isolated even when other people are around Consequently the single parent merits a special form of love and loyalty from neighbors and friends Each of us would do well to take a more understanding and compassionate look at single par- ents reassessing our views of them For the single parent just to be understood and accepted would be a major advance in the right Are you satisfied with your child’s education?
