Logan Assembly of God Church “This (area) is the best of both worlds as far as my family and I are concerned" said die ‘ ‘wet behind die ears” minister ‘‘There are a lot of good things about serving die Lord in Utah and I'd rather be here than anywhere else" he continued "We have the beauty and quietness of a dean community along with all the shopping conveniences one needs” Although bom in southern Illinois Royer considers himxrif a Utah native He lived in die state since he was 12 yean old growing up in Roosevelt living in an area dominated by one religion may be a problem he said but it is really easier in same ways ‘‘Fhr one thing you can talk about religion here People tend to openly discuss religion more fiedy than in bigger ddes" he said After graduation from high school Royer went to Denver Cola and "prepared for die ministry” by working in a Teat Challenge Rehabilitation Center a Christian group home for troubled young people he said After a year there Royer returned to Utah to guide a Teen Challenge Coffee House in Ogden under the direction of the Rocky Mountain District of die Assembly of God Church It was not a group home where young people were able to stay like die one in Denver he said but was more of a street ministry where he counseled young people with "life controlling problems” such as drugs alcohol abuse etc The ministry was able to provide money and transportation to help young people get into die group problems enough to warrant a stay Royer said while in Ogden he also held Sunday school for people who could not handle attending church in a formal setting In 1983 after two years in Ogden he and his new wife Lisa left die “store-froministry" on and returned Boulevard to Roosevelt Washington He became die assistanttyouth pastor which he said provided die training to become a pastor in March 1987 He and Lisa then spent 1)6 years in die Rose Park area of Salt Lake City Royer’s purpose as pastor of the "church planting project” was to canvass die area inviting people to services which were' held at the Holiday Inn in Rose Park Eventually die 20 members attending die services were asked to join die Assembly of God Metro Area Church in downtown Salt Lake City and the work in Rose Park was dosed he said Royer took over the leadership of die Logan church early in May when David Lawrence transferred to Springfield Mo after being in Lqgan since January 1988 The Lord has led my ministry into guiding the people into practical Christianity That is Christianity for everyday living something that works in 1989 Pastor Danny Royer — Since this is still considered a district church Royer said the pastor is appointed by die district office The members’ feelings and concerns about a new pastor are taken into consideration by the district office however he said ' The entire Royer family is glad to be in Logan Royer said his wife and children Rachael 3 and Andy 4 are especially happy to have their “own place" to live after getting to stay with grandma and grandpa or living in a motel between minishies Royer said he’s not sure why there tends to be a continual turnover in ministers of smaller churches in Cache Valley "Perhaps" he said “it is a hard place for ministers because they can't see die kind of growth one whould like to see in die church membership numbers" And die fellowship in small communities may not be die same as in another state he continued “But this is the place I want to be” said die minister who carries a fishing pole in his car trank “just in case” "The change of leadership in churches is good" he said He has known most of die pastors of this congregation and each one has been die kind of leader die church needed at that particular point in time For example he said at one time die ministry was strong in administration and once die group got its feet on the ground as on organized congregation a new pastor encouraged a strong evangelism which benefited die group “Pastor Lawrence was a strong preacher which encouraged die members" he said "The Lord has led my ministry into guiding die people into practical Christianity That is Chris- ' tianity fra everyday living something that works in 1989" He wants to encourage people to spend time everyday not just during a crisis in prayer and reading die Scriptures This consistency he believes brings aboaut maturity and can help avoid a lot of crisis counseling The minister who has already spent time in Logan late at night offering help and guidance to “young people wandering around" plans to stay a king time at this location especially since this is his first full ministry The average attendence in May has been 81 which fills the chapel he said “So if all those people who are coming back to die church to check out the new minister keep coming we will need to remodel and enlarge our Todd CroalandHerald Journal Pastor Danny Royer came to Cache church" Chris Seven son of Sandy and Wendall Turner of Smithfield has recendy
