I believe it is fair to say that they get them from movies and TV What are we going to do about this love of violence among the young? Frankly it scares me to death I am — Concerned in California DEAR FRIEND: And I have been Concerned in Chicago for a long time It does no good to scream at the movie makers and TV producers Apparently there is a big demand for violence and they are going to give the people what they want The responsibility falls on the shoulders of parents They must set up hard and fast guidelines about what their young children can watch A approach can cut down on about 70 percent of the garbage that comes into our living rooms Easy? No But it is a battle that parents must win DEAR ANN LANDERS: Please when someone expresses a point of view that is vastly V different from yours don’t say you hope that ' person falls into the Black Hole of Calcutta It is not possible to fall into the Black Hole of : Calcutta because it is not a hole It's a very “'l small room in a fort where 146 British soldiers “ were trapped by East Indian troops in 1756 All V: but 23 suffocated The death room became ‘ BY ACRES JIM DAVIS known as the Black Hole of Calcutta Got it Annie? DEAR READER: Morgan’s bacillus is Proteus morgani a type of germ that ordinarily inhabits tne intestine There are several species in the Proteus family and all of them have the same unattractive characteristics: They produce severe pneumonia and abscesses and are resistant to many antibiotics Infection is a dreaded consequence of surgery all the more so when the surgery is complicated and extensive as is the case with coronary-bypas- s operations No matter how fastidious a surgeon is some patients will develop wound infections In postoperative patients who are usually sick to begin with this infection can spread through the bloodstream to vital organs Despite the prompt use of antibiotics some patients become gravely ill even die from virulent bacteria particularly those of the Klebsiella Pseudomonas and Proteus families The germs can infect lungs liver heart valves brain and the blood itself Although rare in most medical centers Proteus infection can torpedo the most successful surgery This is one of the complications and risks of surgery Fortunately scientists are developing new types of antibiotics that are lethal to uncommon infections such as Proteus However there will always be the unusual patient who unexpectedly in succumbs to postoperative complications of treatment spite appropriate : rt open-hea- DEAR DR GOTT: I'm suffering from an emotional disorder but I'm beginning to wonder if there’s more to it Two didn’t work so I started taking a normal dose of vitamins I filled up with fluid my breasts became swollen and my emotions were on a rollercoaster ride I discontinued the vitamins and the symptoms disappeared Now I and take 500 miligrams of feel wonderful Could all this be a metabolism problem? “Emotional disorders” DEAR READER: may have an organic (physical) basis For example a surprisingly high number of depressed patients have underactive thyroid lands the hormone deficiency is directly nked to depression Similarly other hormone imbalances can masquerade as emotional illness I think that you need a complete physical examination by an internist Although your emotional swings may not have a physical cause you need to make sure I do not know why you react badly to vitamins — or seem to be helped by phenylalanine an amino acid Perhaps the answer will become clear after you have been tested I should add that phenylalanine (whether in DL- - or can be dangerous or lethal if a rare taken by those with phenylketonuria disorder In healthy persons large doses of phenylalanine can send blood pressure soaring and it can be dangerous for those taking MAO-typ- THE BORN LOSER BY ART FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE I’rtaJT RT ft BY LYNN 1988 enough yauiL be Herring FfiCM LfflERlHAN U6URL" ANDNOBOD'S THereI LPkUyfeR My IRENE tec?'
